What year van? A older one [80s] wouldn't be real bad if it had hei dist. Newer ones would require alot of rewiring or harness from donor diesel van. Then there is the trans. Diesel trans have different shift points and converter. Anything is possible. There are people alot more knowlaged about this than me on this site. I've only gone the other way, olds diesel to olds gas[quite simple].

Ron,
Sounds like it's doable, but not an easy re-power. If you really want to do it, I would look on fleabay or craigslist for a van 6.5. It has different heads and intake, plus the turbo is in the valley.
Also, it sounds like you'll want to either do an NV4500 for simplicity, or find a 4l80e for the tranny.
Good luck and be sure to take a lot of pictures. We like pictures. :D

The engine doesn't have a computer but the 4l80e automatic transmission does. You'd need the computer & wiring for it.
Also don't forget...
Radiator
Exhaust
glow plug relay
lift pump
driveshaft?
By the way, the 6.5 truck engines are turbo, even the mechanical injection. I've heard the vans are not though.

Donnie, just like the trucks there is an NA application and a Turbo application for the van.
Like I said, there is a different head/intake configuration for the vans.

Your stock tranny is a 4L60e and it is also controlled by the computer.

I thought the n/a heads in vans are the same as truck heads. Only turbo heads are different. A built 700r4 would work for a tranny. A donor non turbo van for the rest of the parts would make life alot easier.

anyone have idea where to get a tranny computer that would work well with the set-up i am wanting to do? or a new prom? also i thought the 700r4 and before needed vac for shifting? how would this work or am i wrong about the 700r4?

The 700R4's don't have a vac setup, they utilize a TV cable instead. If you want to keep the 4L60E, i think bowtie overdrives and TCI make a standalone tranny controller. The 700R4 would be the easy way out, as the TV cable isn't hard to connect - fab a quick bracket and adjust it.

The bracket and linkage rod off a 6.2 will bolt right on. The tv cable bracket bolts on the intake bolts below the glow plug controler. The cable attaches to a linkage rod that runs under the intake to the ip.
