: Who's using turbo timers?
il_DURAMAX 10-21-2008, 11:32 AM Considering getting a cool-down timer, how expensive do they usually run for a decent one, and how hard is the install?
Also, post pics of where you have them mounted!
BIGRED08 10-21-2008, 07:08 PM i have one but its not installed yet. plan on doin it some day. i think it was a little over 100 dollars from nate (dstrbd).
Supa Dexta 10-21-2008, 07:20 PM I have one sitting here for my car that I never did put in.. Greddy, and was also around 100.. But they say as long as you don't directly shut the engine off after beating on it, theres no real need for one. Since most of us, have a side street or 2 before we are home, after the highway runs, theres really no need for one, other thing having one more techno gadget on there.
LtEng5 10-21-2008, 07:50 PM have thought about gettin one, shuttin down when you pull in even with a few side streets can be hard as temps can still be in the 500-600* range. even with synth oils this is high to be soaking in. was thinkin and from readings that around 350-375* is a good shut down temp. maybe not so much of a need for daily drivers but for as much as we travel/pull around here ( DP memebers I mean ); pulling into the local rest stop on or just off the highway and shuttin down hot is the spot to have the timer. not sure how it would work with a remote start either
underPSI 10-21-2008, 08:23 PM It only takes around 30 seconds of idle time for the egt's to drop enough to shut down the engine to prevent turbo bearing damage. 30 seconds. That's it. I would save the money for a turbo timer and put it towards something useful. Besides, the only people I see using turbo timers are ricers who put one on their stock eclipse and set it for 5 minute run time just because they think it's cool that their car runs then shuts down without them in it. Having worked at an import performance shop I know why they buy them.

I agree use the money for an EGT gage. Almost all the time when I have got done driving and ready to shut down my EGT's have been in the 300 range. Letting it idle longer does not lower the temp much more on my LLY. With the EGT gage you will know if it is safe to shut down.
Supa Dexta 10-21-2008, 11:11 PM Just a note on egt's.. Don't spend 100$ or whatever on brand name replacement probes. They are simply K type thermocouples and you can buy them for like 35$ online. 1/8" NPT, and fast reading. search omega or something I believe the name is. You'll find them
Lone Wolf 10-21-2008, 11:27 PM ever with a aftermarket turbo, like a Aurora 4000? I normally let mine cool down to 350 or lower, but sometime don't cause im trying to make the first or second truck (fire truck) before it leaves the station.
spinzone 10-22-2008, 03:06 AM My Edge Juice w/Attitude has the turbo timer built in, so I do have one, but didn't really need to do much to install it, pretty much plug and play with the Juice. As previously stated, the truck really does only idle for about 30-45 seconds before EGTs reach about 340 degrees and it's good to shut down.
Don't know how much turbo timers themselves sell for, but it does seem to make more sense to just watch your temps, if you don't already have gauges.

SMITH6.6 10-22-2008, 03:12 AM I have the BD and think just over $100 is worth adding life to the turbo, plus if your towing when you get to were your heading turn the key off and walk away
Tom S. 10-22-2008, 03:19 PM Some remote starts allow you to leave the engine running after removing the key. As pointed out, it does not take very long for a turbo to cool off. A better investment would be a pre-oiler.

??? Pre Oiler ???
radvans 10-22-2008, 06:07 PM I have bd timer. Had it a year before I put it on. Thought it might be a pain. It wasn't. Took about 30 minutes and I was taking my time. Could be done in 5. Works great. During the summer when running the ac and parking it can take up to 2 minutes for the timer to shut the truck down. I am set at 325. Does it help...not sure I still lost a turbo after the install.(35pd or more of boost will kill a stock turbo, quickly) Is it cool...sure people always look at you weird when you walk away from the truck and it is still running. Is it worth it....I think if you tow alot it probably is, otherwise just letting the truck idle for 30 seconds normally does the trick.
On a side note if you install one hitting the brake pedal will kill the motor if you need to shut it down once you have turn the ignition off. You have to get used to that because if you turn the ignition off with you foot on the brake pedal it will by pass the turbo timer. Took me a couple weeks to figure that little gem out. What an idiot!

Pre-oiler supplies oil to the turbo before you start the engine to prevent dry start ups.
DURAMAX_XJ400 10-23-2008, 09:42 AM I Have The Remote Start,, I Only Have To Sit In The Truck 10-15 Seconds Though Before My Turbo Is Cool , And Egts Are Around 250 Or So , But The Remote Start Does Help Espically On Them Cold Winter Mornings.
jonathancasey19 10-23-2008, 03:18 PM Typically you don't need one on journal bearings of course cooler egt's are a necessity. Ideal temp is 300 upon shutdown.
acarrpenter 10-28-2008, 09:46 PM Mine is built into my programmer I have never been hot enough to kick it on except once when I set the egts really low just to see how it worked. I dont know about the stand alone timers but mine threw about twenty codes. I am asuming because the truck thought it should have stopped running
CobraCDN 10-31-2008, 08:26 AM Compustar remotes have a turbo feature in them.
maxthis 11-04-2008, 03:57 PM I have an apexi turbo timer...made for imports but wired it in to my truck.
Works great and I love it....i have mine set for 2 minutes.
Some of you guys will say it's over kill....I call it insurance. It was like 75 bucks a few years ago.
