: Mirrors for Towing
n2deep 03-16-2005, 09:21 PM I'm new to this forum and I'd appreciate your advice. I'm pretty close to making the decision to buy a GM 2500HD with D/A package. I tow a 6,500lb loaded enclosed racecar trailer once a month about 600 mi on average with my 5.4L Expedition. I'm happy with the Expedition but it's towing capacity is definately being pushed. One of the final reasons to make the jump to a new vehicle is I can't see around the trailer. So my question is are the mirrors adequate and which one should I get? I do like the F250 mirrors much better but that's not a good enough reason by itself to buy the Ford.
tophog 03-16-2005, 09:27 PM TTT mirrors are very nice. I beleive a few vendors on the forum here sell them.

tophog 03-16-2005, 09:32 PM BTW, Welcome to the forum! You've found the best source of Duramax information on the Internet. Lots and lots of info here and most of the time the same question has been asked 100 times so the Search tool can be very useful. Be careful as the site is very addicting :)
BlueOx03 03-16-2005, 10:18 PM TTT mirrors are very nice. I beleive a few vendors on the forum here sell them. Check with Kennedy http://www.kennedydiesel.com/

One of my best buds bought TTTs from JK and they shake like hell even on the smoothest roads....of coarse according to Kennedy it's the roads, not the mirrors..."service after the sale" -:t -:t
I've heard all kinds of good stuff about those mirrors, but I'd be careful where I buy them...

tophog 03-16-2005, 10:41 PM BlueOx ...I wouldn't rule out a bad set of mirrors and would be open to everyone's interpretation of "shake" or "vibrate". The TTT's have been great for me thus far on any roads and I'm a relatively picky person. Actually 2 sets of OEM power camper mirrors vibrated bad enough on my truck that was enough for me ...along with the blind spot...so I sh&t canned them.
I know my mirror nuts loosen up over time and I simply retorque them which helps a great deal. I have had 4 sets of mirrors on my truck ... stock, OEM power-camper mirrors, CIPA's and now the TTT's.
I wouldn't be happy with any mirror if they shook to the point where it's difficult to see out of them. Mine vibrate (don't shake) slightly going down the road 65 or so but well within my acceptable boundries....and I do agree rougher/coarser roads do make a difference...but nothing to blame on mirrors you can't see out of. I figure a 20 lb mirror stuck to the side of a tin-thin door skin is going to vibrate a little stuck out 1-2 feet going down the road.
Did your friend contact Schefenacker about the problem?
I was only posting my experience with the TTT's which has been a favorable experience. Like everything, mileage may vary.
BlueOx03 03-16-2005, 10:50 PM That's what I'm saying...Read "I've heard all kinds of good stuff about those mirrors, but I'd be careful where I buy them..." by that I mean they're good, he probably got a bad set, but the vendor you mentioned was the same one he bought them from offered him no help. A good vendor would help. last I knew he was in contact with Schefenacker since John Kennedy of Konnedy Diesel was unwilling to help. That's why I said be careful were you buy them. again, READ!

tophog 03-16-2005, 11:13 PM I edited my original post. After thinking about it I decided it was improper to reference specific vendors. Check the vendor forum for guys that might carry the mirrors. They are available out on the the Internet as well and prices usually don't vary too much.
n2deep 03-16-2005, 11:59 PM Thanks for the quick feedback. I'll search for mirrors but I may as well pick the best ones available when I order the truck. Which ones would you pick if you had to do it over again?
tophog 03-17-2005, 12:04 AM If your talking about ordering or buying a new truck I would definately get the OEM power tow/camper mirrors as they are only $55 more to get via the option upgrade ...then if you don't like them you could sell them and buy aftermarket mirrors (TTT or something else). A lot of guys are happy with the OEM tow/camper mirrors after adding a convex mirror on the PS side mirror.
Diesel Power 03-17-2005, 12:10 AM i picked up 2 sets from John @ DPS. oddly enough, one came with an extra set of wind deflectors (old style was installed on mirrors and new style were in the box) and the other set came with the new ones installed. mine don't shake but just a tid bit on bumpy CA freeways at high speed. Perhaps yours have the old style deflector?
When did the new deflectors become available? If I recall correctly, the mirrors have a manu date on them (or on the box somewhere). Would like to know if I have the old, or new ones. Maybe just order a set of the chrome covers and be done with it!
pepperidge 03-17-2005, 01:21 PM TTT's at driverfx right now $362 shipped with a 10% dicount code
T172JR 03-17-2005, 04:01 PM The camping -towing mirrors are the way to go! Order on the truck, mine added $250.00 to the price of truck.I tow a 26' enclosed race car trailer every week and have had aftermarket mirrors before,no way are they nearly as good.
n2deep 03-18-2005, 01:37 AM I think I'll get the camping/towing mirrors. I'll let you know when I get the truck. Thanks for the help.
LARSONEM 03-18-2005, 12:50 PM If you got a chance to get them (power extending mirrors) on the truck, that is the way to go. I ordered my truck with them, because the trucks the dealer had on the lot had the power folding mirrors instead of the power extending. They can be changed with a reflash to the BCM, but they are expensive - about $500 each over the GM parts counter. If you order an LT option, which includes the power folding mirrors, the power extending ones are about $55 extra. On the LS option which I don't believe comes standard with the power folding mirrors, then the power extending mirrors are something like $235 extra. The power extending camper mirrors do need a spotter, especially on the passenger side to clear up the blind spot areas.
ssduramax 03-18-2005, 02:27 PM My 03 came with the power extending mirrors. I loved them. I did put the little stick-on, round, convex mirror on both sides. I have the power folding smaller mirrors now, cant see around my trailer near as good.
Can anyone tell me how to "tighten" the mirror on the power camper mirrors, my driverside tends to vibrate more than my passenger side. Is there a trick to removing the mirror from the housing (dont want to gorilla it off and break it) Thanks
haneym 03-21-2005, 03:12 PM if anyone that put aftermarket mirrors on still has their power extending lying around and wants to sell them, PM me. i have the standard power non-folding mirrors and a stick on mirror eliminated the blind spot, but the extending option would help out. i cant justify the $$ for the TTTs though. thanks.
BlueOx03 03-21-2005, 06:08 PM If you think the regular mirrors have a bad blind spot, wait til you see, or don't, the one with the extenders...
P.A.S 03-26-2005, 05:30 PM On my 04 LS the power camper mirrors were $238.00 option. I like the mirrors alot, but last summer had problems with them extending. I could here the motor, but nothing, so i would pull them out a little, or fold them in, then they would work. Took it to the dealer to fix. They work alot better now. Anyone else have any problems??
These are interesting.

JJs DuMax 04-06-2005, 01:10 PM I'm researching towing mirrors since I am not happy with the OEM RV extendable camping mirrors. Those that tow trailers/5vers less than 32' long likely don't have the same problem as those of us that tow longer rigs. I cannot see behind my 40' toy hauler, the mirrors just don't go out far enough. I'm looking at the TTT's, also View Vision makes some much like the Ford mirrors.
If I do go with either of these I will have a set of OEM RV extendable mirrors to sell. I'll post when I do. Later. JJ :)
MaxRock 04-06-2005, 01:26 PM JJ, I had the same dilemma, trying to choose between the TTT and the View Vision. I just could not get past the look of the VVs. Way too much like a F$#d. -:t
