: 2002 with a P0380 code help!
sandracer799 10-20-2008, 06:46 PM So my truck just set off a P0380 code.
I know there is a bullitein where certain trucks are covered under warranty but I can not make any sense of it. The truck is an 02 with 127,000.
The code also leaves many variables open it seems. That it could be a controller, a circuit, or a glow plug it self. Is there a certain one that normally goes bad?
Also the truck had a coolant leak that I am going to fix tommorow. Is there a possibilty that some coolant could have gotten on a sensor and caused it throw the code?
Thanks in Advance
JBoutfishn 10-20-2008, 11:41 PM I posted the same question yesterday, no response. :(

Busdriver75 10-21-2008, 12:03 AM most of the time when a 0380 code is thrown, it is a glow plug malfuction. you guys had that much figured out. i've had it on my truck recently as well. as soon as things start slowing down, i'm taking it to the dealer. i believe it should be covered under the bullentin that was posted earlier as mine is a fleet/california emmissions vehicle.
here's a question for you. do you have a vacuum pump on your truck for the EGR system?
NelsonDiesel 10-21-2008, 12:26 AM here's a question for you. do you have a vacuum pump on your truck for the EGR system?
exactly !
it comes down to wether or not you are a federal emissions truck....
dmaxstore 10-21-2008, 12:36 AM Your truck should be covered for Glow plugs for 7years 200k miles like the injectors

No I do not have a vacuum pump. I know for a fact the truck is not a California emissions truck nor a fleet emissions truck.

wrong.

you're out of luck right now as far as being covered under the bullentin. you might just have to pony up the cash for the bad glow plug or controller, whatever is causing the code.

That is what I figured I jut wanted to check and make sure.
Thanks

wish i could help more. if you want to wait a couple days, (read weeks), i'm taking mine to the dealership to get fixed. i can let you know what exact part they're going to replace on mine when it gets there if that helps at all.

Ok cool that will work. Because I cleared the code a few days ago and it has not come back yet.
I am suspecting it might have been from where it tunred the key on and off about a 100 times the other day trying to reset that stupid change engine oil light.(which still is on:mad:).
Busdriver75 10-22-2008, 08:24 AM wait til a cold morning, it'll be back on. mine started about a month ago, and on warm mornings i wouldn't get any code, but its on permanently now that its getting colder.
1BIG4X4 10-22-2008, 02:44 PM I have gotten that code four times now and each time it has been a different glow plug. I do have the benefit of being covered under the extended warranty. My dealer tried to charge me the last time I took it in but I came right home and did a search on this forum and found the post with the bulletin in it. I took it back to the dealer and in two days I had check in my mail box refunding my money. Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that each time I got this code it was a different glow plug. My check engine light just cam on again this week. It has gone off and come back on about 3 times. I plan on taking it to the dealership in the next week or so.

i dont believe so...
leaves and lawns 10-25-2008, 07:01 PM Oh yea i know that code-my dealer changed 12(!) glow plugs in one year! not bad huh?
TOPSHELFdmax02 10-26-2008, 11:20 AM is there a way to figure out if the problem is my glow plugs or the controller?? or would i have to take it to the dealer?
TOPSHELFdmax02 10-28-2008, 10:56 AM and is there somewhere else besides the dealer that i can get the glow plug controller from??

camarosrus 10-29-2008, 12:03 AM Hello, I'm a novice/new member. I'm shopping for a affordable lower priced 2500 Duramax/Allison as it will SIT parked most of the time. I intend to pull a 10,000GVW 20' car trailer, not bey often.
One truck I'm considering is a 2002 2500HD Siverado (not LS or LT) with 102K miles. It's one of those trucks w/o power windows/locks and has rubber floor mats. It was used by a medical company to tow a light trailer to hospitals daily with kidney equip. Always parked inside at night with ZERO rust. Oil changed regularily and misc maintenance done at Chev dealer.
WHAT should I ask dealer about regarding all this F.I. bulletins and would you steer clear of this 2002 or persue it..........
They are asking 11K but with no carpets, windows, etc guess most people dont want.....should I???????????

TOPSHELFdmax02 10-30-2008, 12:09 AM when you got code 380 do your truck lose power
not at all
sandracer799 11-17-2008, 11:10 AM For me it ended up being 4 bad glow plugs. And the coolant leak was the water pump.
Billdog350 12-16-2008, 06:31 PM I just got the dreaded P0380 code. The truck starts fine even @ 20 deg so I might wait a bit to replace whatever needs fixing. I'll look up in the manual what the proper procedure is for checking glow plugs (I suspect continuity test) vs controller. Not real excited about repairing this, but I don't see any options.
Has anyone had luck using EFI Live to troubleshoot their glow plug issues successfully? I avoid dealers at ALL costs.
turk walker 12-16-2008, 06:51 PM to test glowplugs, take off buss bar, so they are isolated.
take a test light hook one end to positive on battery, touch other end to top of glow plug. If test light lights up its good,if no light BAD.
I just replaced all my glow plugs and now started getting the p0380, so I guess its time to replace the controller.
never got a check engine light or codes w/ bad glow plugs.
dmaxrocks 12-16-2008, 08:28 PM my truck tripped the p0380 i ordered a new controller from gmpartsdirect and put it on myself in about 30 min. not to bad of a job to do.
turk walker 12-16-2008, 10:19 PM I just ordered a controller from parts direct.
smirl 12-16-2008, 10:48 PM This will be your glowplugs. Just had (2) of them replaced at the dealer last week under the special policy. You can do a google search on P0380 and will come up with the 10 year, 200K mile factory warrenty. I hand carried a copy of it to the dealer so there wouldn't be any questions or attempt to have me pay any percentage, they own this one. Glow plugs are reasonably cheap and should be on their shelf with quick turn-around. I have a feeling they will try to get you to pay a portion unless you do your homework. good Luck.
JBoutfishn 12-16-2008, 10:51 PM When the dealer replaced my injectors I told them I had been throwing the P03080 code. They replaced glow plug #4. Runs great, no codes on cold mornings.
Billdog350 12-17-2008, 01:34 PM Got the P03080 code and called the dealer today after checking my RPO codes. I have the NE1 so they "should" cover the controller/glow plug issue.
I told them about the smoking at idle, hopefully they're doing the injectors at the same time...fingers crossed!!!!

Any Idea where you found the 10 yr / 200k. i spoke with GM Directly on the Phone and was told that it only was for 7 yr /200 K. I have an '01 which Technically im outta luck by 4 months and if it were 10 yr i might have a slim chance. But at least its a change. Really dont want to take it in on a "maybe" to find out that Maybe is a no and I end up paying for something I could have done myself for much less than the Stealer.

if your vin number fits in that series with the proper emission configuration you're covered for 10 yrs/200K whichever comes first.
braaap11889 11-02-2009, 01:44 PM Sorry to bring up an old thread but I am having this code now and it is only on colder days. Today is about 50 degrees out maybe more and it didnt throw the code but on the colder day it does throw the code. My truck is far from stock and I am not exactly best friends with any dealers do you this they might still replace my controller or plugs under warrenty (my truck does still ahve the 7 year 200k warrenty). If this only occurs on the colder days does that mean it is a glow plug or a controller?
Also with efilive it shows me a scale like thing next to the code hard to explain unless you have EFILIVE but each time the indicator line is near the middle.
Busdriver75 11-02-2009, 10:23 PM policy for injectors is 7yr/200k, glow plugs (under the correct emissions configuration) are covered for 10yr/200k. i'd take it to the dealer and give it a whirl
