Several forums have had lots of conversation about safety issues with 5er to goosneck conversions. I have posted on the internet at: http://www.gorowan.com/2004ram/pin_box/ ,,,,,
Are you safe pulling a trailer behind your 5er or placing others at risk?

in a word, yes. I have the stoutest conversion out there, RV series by pop up industries is heavy duty, very solid and tows great. frame on my trailer is more than adequate for the conversion as well, this coming from the manufacturer.

there are certainly folks running questionable configurations, but there are also those that do their homework ;)

how do you like the RV2

I like mine a lot. I looked at several other types and like the quality.

Just thought I would chime in on this. I believe after years of towing both that it is safe however, the top 5 RV insurance will not cover your RV if you have a wreck with a conversion to gooseneck on your camper they will not pay for it. Mendota, Gilbert, Statefarm, RV America and a couple of more I spoke with said that the manufacturer would have to state that the conversion has no affect on the camper design ( which they won't do). Just letting you know.

jkp, not sure who designates the "top five" but progressive is high on my list and they cover my configuration no problem.

I would think Progressive is up there on top, but thats great if you have no issues. I was just repeating what I was told. I think its different everywhere, but I know in Georgia, we have a 2 ball limit and for those few that two multiple items at the same time the King pin and the Gooseneck ball count as two. Just passing on info.

Why would you want to go to gooseneck from a 5th wheel?

more articulation. if you venture off the beaten path or ever exceeded the side to side limitation of a rocking hitch, this is VERY handy

clean bed at the turnover of a ball, not having to lug a hitch out of the back of the bed. Also, I can put more gear in the bed .

hitching at virtually any angle. if you boondock, eventually you will experience this.

with my 5" of offset, no need for a auto/manual slider and can get 80*+ while backing.

I like the hitch is rated for 30K, adapter for 24K and my particular trailer tows very well with the setup.

I have towed a number of fifth wheel trailers converted to gooseneck, with no problem whatsoever. I intend to do so again, and my insurance company has no problem with the configuration. I am, however, limited to three trailers, by my license.
