I've heard that it could be good to run 1 qt. over full on the engine oil with these 6.5's. Is that true?

I thought that too much oil could impeade on the rociprocating mass, and thus cause somewhat a lack of efficiency. I could be wrong, It's been know to happen a FEW times!! LOL

To much oil is in no way a good thing. if you have to much oil. the capacity of a 6.2- 6.5 is 7.0 quarts. To much oil and the crankshaft will start dipping into the oil, that will foam up the oil and it will not have the time to clear out of the oil. Them you will be pumping foamed oil. When the oil gets into a bearing and is suppose to support a load the oil will not compress but the air will. You will end up with metal to metal contact. Your lifters are hydraulic and the air in them will compress and you loose valve lift. It also takes away a lot of HP when the crank is dipping in the oil. The only time I ever add to much oil is once a year I add a quart of ATF Dino to get out the crud, drive it at low power levels. I use to add it at work then drain when I got home 1/2 hour. Just a thought

I never overfill.

I'll pour 5 or 6 times to make sure I'm on the line, no where above.

Like jp said, at too high a level, the crank will drip heavily into the oil, (drag racers switch to a dry sump setup to avoid the crank dipping into the oil which reduces power because the crank counter weights has to push oil out of the way) and you will lose power, and in a worst case situation, you'll FUBAR something.

You're better off running 1 quart low then one quart high.
That's for ANY engine.

I would rather have my oil level slightly low rather then over filled.

Not saying you should run oil low.... but make sure it is within the marks on the dipstick :)

hmmmm.....i think i put 8 in mine....is the 7 including the filter?

Over filled crankcase with oil can start causing oil leaks. Because of all the extra pressure it causes. I would recommend to drain out the extra oil. Some seals and gaskets can be very large pain to replace.

personally i always just dump 2 gallon jugs in(8 quarts) with filter and everything. i understand what you guys are saying, but i think it takes more than 1 extra quart for it to fill up enough to intrude on the crank.

thats exaclty what i do....2 gallon jugs.

it shows a tad over the full mark on the dipstick

2 gallons for 193,000 miles.

likely not the same for a 6.5 BUT I did own a 1983 toyota 4x4 (first of many over the years) that I bought while on a Military Course that was 1500kms from my home base, I fiqured cause it was burning oil I'd add an extra liter (quart for the US guys:D) I mean what could it really hurt?? this way I could drive longer without stopping to add oil, makes sense right?Funny part was the truck would barely do 80kph (50mph) It was labouring and I had it floored, felt like ithe brakes were stuck on. about 1.5hrs later the truck started to run better, it would hold 60 and I did not have it floored any more, it was actually accelerating and I had to keep backing off the throttle. when I stopped for fuel I checked the oil, sure enough it was down below the upper line on the stick. (or normal range) I guess when the engine is rated only with 100hp when you loose any hp you will notice. I would say that I had lost at least 40% power. that was 22yrs ago and I learned first hand how much hp you could loose and how little oil it took to over fill it.

now maybe on a 6.5 it might take a little more than a liter (quart) seeing as the crankcase holds more than a toyota, but I'll bet the results will be the same

I always filled up with 2 gallons instead of 7 quarts because by the end of the week I would already have lost a quart through the oil cooler.

I put 7qts because it is what it calls for a day after i check and it is still on the line.
How hard is it to pop the hood and pull the dipstick?
Much cheeper the pulling the motor.:D

Huh?

Really leaky oil cooler the last 5,000 miles or so before I pulled the motor out.

it's easy to put in 2 gallons in one go, rather then stop and check, pour, stop and check, etc.
It's also easy to pay a guy to pull your engine and fix it.

Trust me, it's not easy when you have to do it yourself.

I love my engine far too much to risk things.
