The steering on my truck is buggered and I need to do an upgrade but I've got no idea what to do.
The 6" procomp kit I have installed apparently changed the original idler/pitman arm setup and I got no idea what kind of parts I need to make it all good again.
Right now my tie rod ends and idler/pitman arms are kinda pounded out.
Whats all different on the procomp lift??? And what do I need to do to strengthen the system up???

what year of truck do you have? The 6" kit i have on my truck has been on for about 4 months and ive had 0 problems.
On my '02 with a pro-comp, all steering parts were OEM.

Is your kit a Spindle/Knuckle lift or a Full Drop?

All steering components should be factory. Replace the pitman/idler with factory or equivelant parts. Then add the Cognito pitman/idler support kit and those parts will last forever. The tierods/ends can be replaced with factory, or upgraded to an aftermarket set. There are a couple options on these. Get ahold of NorCal Nick, he can help select the right components.
Its an 04.
Norcal Nick couldn't help me with a damn thing. I asked basically what I asked here in a few different ways and didn't really get anywhere.
The only thing I got out of it was that there is some sort of steering support unit that is aftermarket and using the braces like mentioned wouldn't work.
Ive had no problems with the lift. But floor it a few times and send 500hp through 35" tires to the steering components and they start getting alittle worked over. Also, blow over 200 curbs and drive through 10 miles of ditch everytime you start up your truck. And then... move to a place in the world that manages to have paved roads that are in worse condition than ANY unmaintained road I've ever driven on... and I used to inspect lease sites in the mountains....
So yes... the steering is in need of new parts. Preferable before winter sets in too hard and I need to be in 4x4 most of the time.
Now.. I'm an idiot so I don't know whats different between what it was when it was stock and what it is now that I have the procomp 6", which is a full drop kit. I dont even really have a place that I can crawl under it right now and look let alone change any parts. So I was just inquiring incase someone else has been down this road and could enlighten me. That way when I get a couple days I can drive down south and swap some parts out and be prepared for what the deal is.
So I'm guessing that I should buy new idler and pitman arms, cognito braces, and the centerlink to tie-rod end kit??? And then I'll rip everything out and put all this new stuff in?

FMOS, I just installed the 6" procomp kit on my '03 (will post pics soon). The lift for your truck and my truck are the exact same (though mine is two wheel drive). Your kit is nothing more then a drop bracket kit, meaning the pitman arm, idler arm, drag link, tyrods, spindles, upper and lower control arms are all factory. The only thing the kit does, for steering components, is provide a 6" "centerlink drop" that lowers your drag link down. Sounds to me like you probably have ball joints that need to be replaced. Inspect the tyrod ball joints, as these wear out quickly. How is your alignment? Bent tyrods? Also check the upper and lower ball joints. On my truck the lowers seems to be pretty strong and held up much longer then did the uppers. This is all assuming you have OEM upper control arms. I have heard of people using a press to install new ball joints. My suggestion is to buy the cognito UCA with bolt in ball joints. Consider HD tyrods as the factory ones have been known to break. To give you a better idea of what you have installed check out this link.

Note: pay close attention to page 12 and 13. Page 12 will show the Procomp Centerlink and page 13 will show you your OEM steering linkage and the new Procomp steering parts.

I would just inspect front suspension parts for wear. Jack one side up at a time on the front and try to move the tire that is off the ground in different directions and check for play and movement, there isn't supposed to be much at all. From my previous conversations with Norcal, the procomp drop centerlink basically works as the cognito supports do for the idler arm and pitman arm and there isn't much room to add the cognito supports. He did recommend their idler arm brace that gets welded inplace though...

Yes the Pro Comp kit uses a centerlink drop bracket but still retians the original centerlink. Check the idler and pittman arm for play by jacking one wheel off the ground and turning it left to right (watch the idler or pitman arm pivot bolt for play fron to back.) Replace them if worn with any oe style part. I know the cognito braces will not fit a cst kit wich is a similar steering setup as pro comp but I cant remember if they fit the pro comp kit. The tie rods are oem so going to hd tie rods will give some added durability. Using your truck like you described will wear parts quickly so keep an eye on everything.
J spicket... thanks, thats exactly to a tee what I was looking for. I scoured thier site for a while but couldn't find that. I must be blind. Thanks!!!
