Hi Guys,
Just wondering for those of you that have added fuel tanks to your bed what brand you picked and any other suggestions you may have. I see Transfer-Flow has some really nice tanks and monitoring but a little on the pricey side. This is going in my 2500HD, Crew cab, 4X4, LLY.

Thanks,
Rob (in Michigan)

I have had my Transfer-Flow for about 4 years now. It started out in my 01 Dodge and the when I bought my Chevy I had it moved into it. The only thing I had to do was buy the new computer. Anyway I like it, I have had no problems out it what so ever. I don't know how many gallons have went threw it. I put 160,000 on the Dodge and I have got 60,000 on the Chevy now. The pump is still going strong (knock on wood). I would recamend it to anybody. I know they are a little more expencive than other tanks but I feel it was well worth the money.

I've had an American Tank www.auxtank.com in my bed for 7 years. Not cheap, but it was a complete tank and installation kit including pre-wired harness, hoses, clamps, connections and even wire-ties. Has a frame mounted 8-way selector valve that feeds from the selected tank, recircs through the OEM cooler to the selected tank and swaps the OEM fuel gauge to the selected tank's sender with the flip of a toggle switch.

I had a place that makes tanks build me a tank for my truck. it holds 70 gallons and i just used the splice in kit you can buy through northerntool. I also added a electric valve i got off of ebay so i can swtich the fuel on and off when need be along with a manual backup. So i don't have to worry about the fuel gauge going to E on me. then i can also add a pump if i feel it's neccesary later Total for everything was about $300

I have the RDS 60 gallon toolbox tank combo from northern tool.

It works great I don't even put gas through the normal filler neck anymore. It is gravity feed and if I close the valve and need to open it to fill the truck up it takes approx 45-1hr to fill up. Fills it faster than the truck can burn it. Took me approximately 1 hour to install it. I even put a cheapo lawn mower fuel filter in line between the tank and the splice in the fuel filler hose to keep any chunks of dirt and crap out of the factory tank. I could add the electric valve but its easier just to leave the valve open. When the fuel gauge moves its time to fuel up.

After looking at all my options I decided this was the most cost effective and cleanest looking. I have a toolbox that fits what I need to carry and an extra 60 gallon capacity.

If you know someone who can weld decent just make your own. My buddy and I made mine. It is a 75 gal. tank. Has a switch in the cab to turn on a small pump which then siphens the fuel from the aux tank into the stock tank. Fills fairly quick. Had the tank painted to match the color of the truck so you don't even notice it's back there. Lucky enough to be able to go to Mexico for my diesel at $2.30 a gal. Check out my garage for pics...

You fellas that have the gravity tanks don't get a fuel gauge error? I seem to recall that if your fuel gauge doesn't move for a certain amount of time while racking up miles on the in-bed that the BCM computer will drop it to zero assuming there's a fault in the reading. I believe that a key-on/off will reset it, but it will re-occur until gauge reading and miles traveled get back in normal range.

That is one reason why I went with the Transfer-Flow. I have friends that did not get there fuel gauge to read right agian. Except for one and he had to drop his tank to fix it. I don't know if they ever tried to key-on/off to reset or not. If they did I did not hear anything about it.

adamp70..better be careful goin south of the border i recently read in diesel world that if you fill up an auxillary tank that they can park your truck until you pay a huge fine and you dont even get to keep the extra fuel :(

Ya, I heard the same but that was months ago and only lasted a few weeks. Plus that was more over in the Texas border towns. They finally realized that they were screwing up and dicontinued doing that. Now some stations will only put 50 liters (12 gal) into your Aux tank per person. So if you bring a bunch of friends with you can get it filled. I know of a station that doesn't ask questions just fills both tanks up. Tip them 10 bucks and they are happy. Customs asks what you came down for and you say "fuel"...no questions asked. I have friends go down once a week with no problems.

I have an RDS fuel tank & tool box combo. Gravity feed. If you drive about 200 miles (don't know the magic number - maybe it's hours for all I know) without shutting off the truck then the fuel gauge will peg on EMPTY and the low fuel light will come on. It will stay like this until you use up all the fuel and your main tank moves off FULL. I did it once and will never do it again. 4 weeks and 820 miles is a long time to wonder if you're going to run out of fuel.

You could have just closed the valve. I made a 650 round trip yesterday, after 140 miles the gauge pegged on low fuel. Left the truck running the whole time. When the aux tank ran out and the level in the main tank started going down the guage started working just fine again. Also works if you turn the truck on and off.

I don't have a valve. It's a float check valve in the tank.

Cycling the key won't work unless you have already consumed enough fuel that the fuel gauge has moved.

"Cycling the key won't work unless you have already consumed enough fuel that the fuel gauge has moved.[/quote]

The truck has to be shut off for about 5 minutes. The computer doesnt shut off with the key right away. It takes a few minutes to power down. After that the gas guage will read full again.

Not my truck. Or anybody else on this forum with the same problem. Fuel level has to drop in addition to a key cycle.

I have a 90 gallon auxiliary tank by a Auxiliary Tank just east of Dallas. Tank is on a switch and stock gauge is used. It never reads correctly for the auxiliary tank. And my main complaint is when the auxiliary tank gets down to about 30 gallons, I have to switch to my stock tank. Otherwise, a hill will cause a huge air pocket and kill the truck. I'm going to switch it to a true transfer tank soon.

I got a 115 gallon in bed tank with a switch on dash to top off the factory tank as I go. I bought an auto meter fuel gauge from autozone and an over rearview mirror pod (pic in garage). It came with instructions for diffenert tank sizes. Pretty universal, fairly accurate too.

Do you guys know if this fuel gage issue is only with the older model trucks or will this effect my 2005. I was going to order my gravity feed tank today until I read the rest of the postings in my thread. So, is the only other option to pump it from one tank to the other? Please advise...

RDS Under the tool box, 37gal. Works great. Pics in my garage. I would like to find a metal locking gas cap for it though. If anyone knows of where to get one it would be appreciated. I think it uses Ford treads.

I have an ATTA tanks AT45L-RT. It holds 45 gallons, fits underneath my Retrax cover, and is a high-quality, American-made product. I also bought the freedom fill system to go along with it, which allows you to install the whole tank without cutting any fuel lines, without leaking diesel on the ground (or on you), and transfers fuel to the main tank automatically. The tank came with everything you need to install it; right down to the electrical connectors and zip ties. Couldn't be happier.

I have a 91 gallon RCS tank from Northern Tool, and I set it up to gravity feed into a tee in the main tank vent tube. I added a solenoid valve with a switch & indicator light in the cab. This allows me to watch the stock guage & range computer, and just flip the switch and refill the main tank while I'm driving. When it gets full, just turn the switch back off, and the computer stays happy. I plumbed it all with 3/8" line, and added a second line as an aux. tank vent to help speed up flow. Without it, I could sometimes driain the main tank faster than it would refill.

Just put in a 65 gallon tank on my Dually from American Tank. http://www.auxtank.com/auxtank/home.asp Very clean set-up. From the ones I looked at, this one seemed the best IMHO.

I have a RDS 90 gallon tank/box combo. I use a small pump to transfer into my vent hose and a ball valve to throttle it. On a trip I can start the pump at 1/4 tank and run for hours w/o overfilling if I set the valve right. Never had a gauge issue either.

I have the Transfer flow's toolbox/fuel combo in bed tank for 40gals. I have used it for almost two years and have had no problems with it. I would buy another one if I needed one. It is worth every dollar.
Have a nice day

Kennedy did you just hook it strait to the vent line?? I would rather go this route then to cut up the large fuel filler line.

I have made an adapter like the northern tools one but was wondering about the smaller tube that is inside of the larger rubber fill line. How do you remove that so you can put the adapter in to fill the tank thru the fuel filler line?
