: Predator on 120
tokita 10-13-2008, 03:46 AM I get the best milage with my predator on the 120 horse setting. I baby the truck but I'm still concerned about engine damage do to the high horse setting. It also rattles pretty loud on the 120 setting. I watch my exhaust temp and never go over 1200. Has anyone had any engine problems with the predator set on 120?
camozuki 10-13-2008, 07:59 AM No, and I have been running 120 for 25k miles.
SMOKINU497 10-14-2008, 01:33 PM No problem here. Have been running it for several miles now!!
LWATSON 10-14-2008, 06:56 PM I don't think you will have any issues runing the 120 setting unless its the tranny.

What type of mileage are you guys getting at the 120 HP level? Just curious. My wife has a heavy right foot while driving in-town - she continually breaks the rear tires loose on the 65 HP level. But, I'm also interested in wringing out as much mileage.
fishooker04 10-14-2008, 07:14 PM When i ran the 120 tune is aw 16.2 hand calculated, when i first put it on and that was racin people alot and blowin some smoke with a heavy right foot:D:D in town i thought it was unbelieable how much i got out of it for how i was runin it it made a huge difference then i took it off and sold it.
beach_33 10-14-2008, 08:22 PM you dont need to worry about the motor on the 120 setting. there are alot of people running much more on stock motor
tommy4ua 10-16-2008, 02:02 AM no problem i have 35000 mile on the 120 setting
nate2500HD 10-17-2008, 10:01 PM Ho well does a stock 6 speed automatic tranny hold this tune?
What kind of mpg are people getting towing with the predator?
LWATSON 10-18-2008, 04:08 PM Ho well does a stock 6 speed automatic tranny hold this tune?It will hold pretty good if you dont beat on it all the time. I you put in a transgo jr. you'll be set then the week link will be the converter, and they do good until about 150-160 rwhp on the 6-speeds.
tinypeckerwood 10-18-2008, 04:23 PM What kind of mpg are people getting towing with the predator?
I get around 7-8 when I tow my set up. Predator on 40 hp for towing.
Unit453 10-18-2008, 07:53 PM Ho well does a stock 6 speed automatic tranny hold this tune?
Not well. It'll wear it out real quick if you're flogging it all the time. It does give the best mileage though due to the advanced timing. I wouldnt go above the 85 tune on a stock truck if its gonna be driven hard. Even that will break the trans at some point. Thats about the limit to what this trans can handle, let alone the 120 tune. Buddy of mine with an LBZ made 458/754 on a Superflow Dyno with nothing more than an S&B, MBRP 4" turbo back and Predator 120...Those things are more potent than you'd think. Not too shabby for a $300 programmer.
fishooker04 10-19-2008, 11:18 AM I am having transmission problems now and i have the trans go in it. It seemed to be alright on the 85 tune but the 120 was pretty hot and the tranny hated it now mine is slippin pretty bad in 5th gear, the 120 was fun and smoked pretty good but i wished i hadnt ran it for long on the 120.
396d1ss 10-26-2008, 12:35 PM ive ran mine for 34k miles on the stock allison and have not had 1 hiccup out of it...btw i got a heavy right foot too
leathal02 10-26-2008, 11:17 PM I mostly ran mine on the 85 Hp...then couldnt stand it anymore so i changed it to the 120. Took probably 10,000 miles and I slipped the clutches and put it in limp mode. Burnt fluid and all. Of course I ran the dog shit out of it, but I knew from the beginning the tranny didnt like the high setting. Getting a SC IV now....and probably gonna get a bigger tuner...:D
tsnow 10-27-2008, 03:48 AM definitly helps to not flog it in fifth, use manual mode set to 4
Quick Storm 10-29-2008, 12:41 AM what kind of mileage are you seeing with it on 120? i'm running the 65hp setting and last trip with 85%highway, saw 20.2mpg. do you think i would get betterwith 120?
stock truck-ppe airbox mod-mbrp 5"exhaust
PADiesel 10-29-2008, 08:14 AM I run mine pretty much on 65 all the time except when I'm towing around 10K then I bump it down to 45. I've tried 85 which was ok but was only a power fun factor for me since I actually got worse mileage than on 65. I've also tried the 120 for about 10 miles and backed it back down. The tranny was learning but when it smeared every gear going easy I figured it was not good for me since I have a tendency to not show any mercy when I have to deal with stupid people on the road. At some point I may end up with an ATS or Suncoast upgraded tranny and then I won't care but for now I plan on taking it easy.
jcbowtie 10-29-2008, 09:50 AM does the 120 tune smoke ALOT more then the 85 tune?
jcbowtie 10-29-2008, 10:01 AM also how much does a transgo jr sell for? and if i get this im safe on the 120 tune. thanks guys
fishooker04 10-29-2008, 10:29 AM Its smokes pretty good when you initially accelerate then when the boost comes up it clears the smoke up pretty good, if you sorta put under load then accelerate you can get a nice cloud. The transgo sells for about 120 bucks or so.

...I know, I asked the same question as the 4th reply to the thread.

I never calculated it because i only ran a few tanks on 120 but it was definitely better i think i was gettin about 410 miles to a tank and that was driving hard i have a 26 gallon tank, but i never calculated it so this was just estimating but yes i did notice a difference runnin the 120 tune i think it helped my mpg's out alot all my driving was mostly city and hard miles and it still seemed to be better than any of the other tunes with the predator.
camozuki 10-30-2008, 02:09 PM I tried the other tunes and there wasn't enough difference in mileage to justify the lesser HP and Torque, so I settled with the 120. I see consistent 16-16.5 and if I go easy on it I can get up to 18. Thats with all around driving without a load.
bonz02 10-31-2008, 11:07 PM with no load i can get 23.2mpg hand calculated on a long distance trip, with the predator on the 120 setting. just driving around town its usually 16-17 on the 120 setting.

ok, this is more like it. i run the 65 setting and mostly highway i see like 25+ mpg. next tank i will change to 120 and see the difference. now that diesel is sub $3 it will be easier to change and test and won't hurt the wallet as much.
GTA91 11-14-2008, 05:29 PM When I initially got my predator I tried all the settings... its been on 85hp ever since for fear of hurting the tranny with the 120hp. It was definitely making quite a bit more power on 120 though. I might do a transgo and bump it back up to 120 for normal driving.
13Fox 11-14-2008, 08:49 PM I've never had mine above 85, and that was only for a week or so. Too scared I'd hurt the tranny. I may bump it up to 120, but since it's time for winter fuel it may be tough to compare mileage right now. On the highway at 60mph empty I get between 19-21 mpg on the 65 setting.

Any comparative fuel mileage results yet?
CStevenson 11-16-2008, 08:02 AM 74,000 miles on 120 setting. I got a light foot so so no tranny problems either

I decided to play around and try the 120hp setting yesterday. A few weeks ago we made a 140 mile round trip drive twice and got about 19mpg on the 85hp setting... that was in about 70* weather. Last night I put it on 120hp and we made the same 140 mile round trip once and it got 23mpg... and that was in 35* weather.
I'm not sure what to think... 4 more MPG and in much colder air? Didn't make sense to me... I'm going to experiment with the 120hp and see what she does. This is all normal driving, no loads, and taking somewhat easy on it although there were a few small WOT "hits" last night. I'm pretty impressed so far... guess I need to order that Transgo.
My main concerns are the extra engine noise (rattling) and the tranny. The tranny seems fine, definitely needs some relearn time I believe and I'm definitely taking it easy on it. This thing definitely blows a little black smoke now. I guess its time for a boost stick and that 5" turboback. :D
13Fox 11-16-2008, 07:39 PM Is that mileage off the DIC or hand calculated? I find with mine the higher hp setting the farther off the DIC is.

Interesting info. That was running stock exhaust?
GTA91 11-16-2008, 08:09 PM It was hand calculated and with stock exhaust minus the muffler.
Jason Duramax 11-16-2008, 08:18 PM Nice. I think I'm one step closer to owning one...
camozuki 11-16-2008, 08:33 PM I have been running the 120 for about 25k miles and I dont think there is any way in hell any of you guys are truely seeing over 20 mpg's. The most I have saw is 18 and that was driving like a paw paw. Mostly I see between 15.5 and 17 unloaded. Try verifying your speedometers with a GPS. I had to set my Predator to 31.5" for a 33" tall tire. If anyone has saw a 20+ with accurate readings I apologize and would really like to know your secret.

X2. Not to insult anyone's intelligence, but make sure you verify your speedo/odo with GPS before believing your calculations. I just put my winter 265's on and had to set the tire size with 265/75/16s to 260/70/16 to get an accurate reading. With the 285s it's something like 277/72/16 IIRC. I have not(yet) ran on the 120 setting so if someone is really getting that kind of mpg with it, that's great!
GTA91 11-16-2008, 08:54 PM Hell mine normally gets 16-18 on the 85hp setting... hand calculated and I've confirmed my speedo with my cousin's GPS... if anything its actually low 1-3mph which would actually give me just a tad more MPG. :)
GTA91 11-16-2008, 08:56 PM There are also alot of variables that are going to affect MPG on any given truck...
-tire pressure
-tire width
-vehicle mileage/condition
-driving style
-terrain (hilly/flat)
-temperature/elevation
-fuel
Quick Storm 11-24-2008, 12:52 AM so i finally got a back to back comparison. ran 120 right after the 65. both tanks were filled to the top, 30gal. 570miles on 120 and 565 on 65. i drove the same on both tanks, maybe just a tad harder on the 120. mostly highway(half was in traffic), some city. both tanks avg. 19mpg. looks like i will keep it on 120 and the sub $3gal diesel also helps out.
