I am not sure if this is a problem or not, I had my tranny rebuilt about a year ago and I replaced the TPS at the same time. Ever since then, I have noticed that it takes alittle while after the truck shifts in to fourth for the first time for the lock up to activate, and it seems to take even longer on a cold morning, no more than a couple of miles. However the lockup is always there and goes back in fine after it works once and is there right away when the truck is warm. Does the TPS need to be reset or is this just a case of my overactive imagination.

Lock-up will not happen until the engine gets up to around 100-140 degrees. What your describing sounds normal.

Anyone know what the reason for this is?

It is to keep from overloading and lugging the engine before it has enough cylinder temp. It also helps to protect the torque converter from premature failure as the cold ATF doesn't flow that well.

He has a 1991 truck and it believe it will lock up. Make sure that your TPS is adjusted correctly.
