What needs to be done to get the allison to shift into 2nd for a slow start in slippery conditions? Some older autos would do this.

I believe you would put it in manual mode and shift it into 2nd but I could be wrong.:o:

Mine is an 2005 so it doesn't have a manual per say. I can select D 1,2,3 . . but it stil starts out in 1. The selector only tells it which gear to stop at. There must be a way to do it even if is a mod.

Place it into manual and select 2nd gear it will act as a torque limiter and if the tires start to spin it will reduce engine torque to help maintain traction.... I know for a fact it works as my 2008 spends about 1/3 of the time on a large construction site and the dirt is more sand and clay than anything....very little water will make it very slick

get efilive and do the 1st gear delete

putting it in manual "2" wont do anything. still starts in 1st. shifts into 2nd and stays in 2nd till you shift up.

I also do this while plowing, when pushing big snow on loose snow pack. It helps with wheel hop. Details are in the owners manual.

I think hondarider is dead on there. I have no auto/man. mode it is a 2005 model. If I put it in 2nd it still starts in 1st. If I use EFI to delete the 1st gear will it still start and shift normally when in "D"?

its not very good period to start in 2nd with the 1st gear delete. its not very fun to drive in the city.

Unless you have the new trans that gm hasnt come out with, your wrong.

yeah I dont get this...GM talks about it in all their brouchurs (sp) and stuff....but I have yet to see it actually work in any LBZ/LMM ive driven. Maybe it was one of those things that got 86'd at the last minute, like the so-called electrically actuated cooling fan that they were supposed to have??

??? It really works in my truck, not imagination. (07 6 speed). Perhaps unless you're in a situation where it would help, you can't feel the torque reduction? The peak torque right off idle in these things while pushing snow in loose pack has caused wheel hop several times for me, and after selecting manual/2nd gear and continuing, reduced wheel hop due to less torque resulted. It feels like the engine is lugging a bit, not dramatically, but obvious. So again, ???

A new low-traction mode also is standard on vehicles equipped with the diesel engine. When the driver selects second gear while stopped and wheel slip occurs, the transmission torque-manages the engine to limit tire slip on slippery road surfaces. From Here:

Low Traction Mode

(http://gsi.xw.gm.com/si/showDoc.do?docSyskey=1717205&cellId=73746&pubObjSyskey=1717205&from=sm&pubCellSyskey=73746&deliveryEffectiveDate=Jun+1%2C+2010#ss4-1717205)If your vehicle has the Allison Transmission®, or the Hydra-Matic® 6-Speed Automatic Transmission, it has a Low Traction Mode that can assist in vehicle acceleration when road conditions are slippery, such as with ice or snow. While the vehicle is at a stop, select the second gear range using Range Selection Mode. This will limit torque to the wheels after it detects wheel slip, preventing the tires from spinning.

From here:http://www.justanswer.com/chevy/3o6j7-drive-silverado-3500-duramax-unsure-when.html

It also states:If you manually select 2 (Second) in an automatic transmission, the transmission will start in second gear. You can use this feature for reducing the speed of the rear wheels when you are trying to start the vehicle from a stop on slippery road surfaces.
But I know that the 6 speed will start in 1st gear, so that must be referring to the 5 speed.
