: Installing Boost Guage
DieselSlug 10-09-2008, 03:58 PM I am going to install my boost gauge this sunday and have a few questions about it. I bought the optix boost gauge from heath diesel. What size hole should i drill into my intake and what tap should i use, it looks like the kit came with two different sizes a smaller and larger size added maybe for screw-ups of the first size?? There are no instructions that relate to the drilling part only the electrical hook ups. Should i use pipe tape on all threaded connections to ensure no leaks? And where is there a key on power wire so the light isnt illuminated all the time? Or could it be wired into the headlight switch? where would that be? I was also wanting to know if anyone had a wiring diagram on a power compass mirror off a tahoe that the prev. owner installed in my truck but hasnt been wired up yet?
thank you michael
jbsaxman 10-09-2008, 04:20 PM *shrug* I don't remember what size of drill and tap I used. I just matched it up for the size of my fitting. I did, however, use pipe tape to make sure it was an air tight seal.

Aren't you just a nice feller....:D
Long time no see/talk.
DieselSlug,
You'll be fine if you follow the FAQ's and take your time. Very easy process just have a new upper IT gasket ready(although alot of people don't change them every time they remove the upper(I'm just anal)).
Do a search on the site as well and you will find pics, as well as differences of opinion as to where to place it. Either way works.

I did this, you have an "F" engine, so you could too - I may eventually
drill and tap the manifold, but I haven't had a reason to pull it yet -
the IAT seems to have no problems in that location

DieselSlug 10-10-2008, 12:49 PM I like that idea tookielee, but everytime i unthread somthing out of the cast intake it always breaks. I had to send my t-stat crossover out because i broke the threads off the heater line in the crossover, 50 dollars later plus the new 8 dollar nipple from the dealership it was drilled and tapped out, ever since then im kinda petrified of messing with the cast iron. Thats why im asking so much about the tap and drill size, i dont want to mess up. And i dont have much in taps so i need to go out and buy one. I did go out and buy another gasket, i will install all of this sunday hopefully..... Yeah, ive been waiting in the dark to be bestown the heath diesel box from the ups dude. IT DOESNT EXPLAIN MUCH ON THE INSTALLATION OF THE GUAGE BUT THE TURBO MASTER IS IN SUPERB DETAIL!! (Sorry accidentally hit caps lock).Cant wait to get some semblance of fuel milage and start going up hills faster than 30mph!!!!!!! Thank you for your help it is grealty appreciated!!
DieselSlug 10-12-2008, 10:15 PM Well installed the boost gauge, took it for a ride and just as i thought.....no turbo. Then put the turbomaster on (that little c clip was a pain to get out), ended up cutting it with a saw-zall. Took it out for a ride, 5psi at spring length of 2.5'', now adjusted up and getting 7psi wot. Its a different truck all right, not a racer but at least has some semblence of power, the boost gauge looks cool in the cab. Very impressed with heaths stuff!!!!! Next is a straight pipe conversion.
JMJNet 10-13-2008, 12:03 PM So did you do another tap or the one like Tookie?
DieselSlug 10-15-2008, 11:31 PM i tapped it in the rear drivers side corner like the diagrams showed, i am petrified of taking things out of crusty cast aluminum, it drilled like cheese!!!!

I don't really get what the difference between putting it on the upper versus the lower intake is?? Wouldn't they both show the same boost?
edzzed 10-15-2008, 11:44 PM nice, but what is the black thing with fins in the right of the picture. that looks like something that should not be there. might wanna move it near the bumper when you have time. Ed

Brooklyn tow 10-16-2008, 04:29 AM Grey, You ever have a limp mode episode with that setup?
Did you do a before and after on IAT's........are they still the same?
Just curious?
DieselSlug 10-16-2008, 12:10 PM Next project is the straight pipe, will it gain me any noticeable power? Will it smoke more? With the turbo master when i romp on it i have no smoke at all. I would like more power but i am moslty doing it beacuse my system has a leak at every joint and other rust holes in between. Just want to cut it infront of the cat about 2 inches there is a large "split" in the pipe there going around about half the pipe, then the bottom of the muffler is opening like a tuna can. I hope i can run a straight pipe, no bends or anything over the crossmember (i dont have a bender), i know you cant on gas jobs but how about the diesel?
