Speed - The site is biodiesel.org......

Also biodieselnow.com, but the ladder does not offer exclusively ASTM spec'd fuel, IIRC.

For a good source in Southern California, there is leoco.com. Lee Escher Oil Company. They are located in the Coachella Valley, but they have delivery trucks all over the place. B100 was going for ~ 3.00/g, possibly cheaper now...............

Prices for B100 at a local Pettit Oil distributor 5.85/gallon $322 for a 55 gal drum. Wish I could find some for $3.00/gal.

I would love to start using B100 to make B20, but this is a little too expensive for me. Works out to about 3.33/gal for B20 (#2 currently @ $2.70/gal).

Must be missing something! It seems a general price is $3/gal, however pump diesel as of 3/19/5 was $2.19. Does one get better mpg or increase power for same gals used??
Would look into making some, but if cost is above $2/g why bother. Yes, Yes I know, stick it to the oil company - an evil money making business (as opposed to good government entity). Have found a local supply and will price Monday.

I'm not doing it because it's cheaper, but for the lubricity. If I'm going to put an additive for lubricity, it might as well be bio. I only run a max of 20% because of the price.

When listing the BD price, a D2 price for comparision really helps. Thanks to those that have done that.

Anyone in Michigan using BD? I have to think of an excuse to drive the truck to Manchester, MI to try some.

At what point does it get LESS expensive to run BD, than D2?
See http://www.mda.state.mn.us/ethanol/balance.html

I'll guess I should do a little more research, then sharpen a pencil.

Yeah, I've been there... One problem with their site is they don't allow you to search by zip code too see what's closest, and it may not be a complete list. I was hoping someone from around here may have seen B20 for sale somewhere. From my searching the closest place to me that sells biodiesel is 50 miles NW of me...

LA DMAX
10-05-2005, 11:26 PM
Got a question. If B99 is $2.75 in Arizona and B100 is $3.08 in Colorado than why is it $5.75 at ITL fuels in Cudahay? Just looking at those 2 cities tells me it can't be the transportation, Tucson is closer to Los Angeles than Boulder. If someone is price gouging(and it looks like they are) than BD will be a very tough sell. Instead of having a cheaper alternative they want to keep it higher or at best the same price as diesel. What a crock of "SHI*" Excuse my english.

LA DMAX

mannytranny
10-05-2005, 11:28 PM

LA DMAX
10-05-2005, 11:34 PM
Manny,
No, haven't heard of any other place in the LA area except for ITL. About a year or 2 ago I emailed RonJT, who is a member here, he said that at first BD may be more expensive than diesel but as it became more popular the price would go down. It has gotten more popular for sure, just looking at the BD websites tells me that BD use has more than doubled or even tripled over the past 2 years. Now they will say the price is high because there is more demand. You just can't trust anyone anymore. Just plain greed if you ask me.

Jeff, unless it is a real nightmare to change the filter on the road, I would run it until it starts plugging up. You get your money's worth out of it that way. Also, if you just started using the bio, you may go through several filters anyway as it cleans out the tank and lines.

Flying J in Effingham, IL (I57 & I70) has it at the big rig pumps. Haven't been there lately but price was the same as #2 if you paid cash, $.04 more for C/C.
It's also processed in Zeeland, MI and available at Crystral Flash locations in the Grand Rapids, MI area. Don't know the price and haven't used it yet. Been told it can be a problem in cold weather.

In Los Angeles, Pacific Palisades:

The fuel is retailing @ $3.49 per gallon.

It is sort of nuts, but we are using them for our fuel. Locally available fuel at the commercial pump, made from local agricultural oils and locally manufactured. Local, local, local for our community, ain't it sweet.

why is this bio stuff more expense than regular diesel?

Over the decades the petroleum industry has managed to get tons of breaks from the government in taxes, drilling rebates and incentives. We all pay for those subsidies in our taxes. Mainly the government uses those subsidies to keep petroleum pump prices artificially low to stimulate the economy (and get votes).

The actual cost of biodiesel is CHEAPER than dino-diesel, but because it is not a petroleum product many of the government subsidies and tax breaks do not apply. Biodiesel users pay close to the real cost of their fuel at the pump, while dino prices reflect major subsidies.

B100 is available through the Carolina Biofuels Coop at 5 locations in the central NC area. You must join the coop, but then you can use any of the five current pumps in Moncure, Pittsboro, Carrboro, Durham, or Hillsborough. Currently B100 is $3.50/gallon at all locations. You can also have fuel delivered to you anywhere in the area by the coop's tanker truck.

If you have the raw material the Coop also has equipment you can use to make your own biodiesel in small or large batches.

For more information about joining the coop and accessing the pumps go to:

They are located in Troy, on the east side of the Hudson River. They are about 10 blocks north of downtown Troy, north of the Collar City Bridge / Rt 7. The station has a big dinosaur shaped sign.... They have a cardlock pump that also takes credit cards. Price is $3.049 per gallon, same as for their regular diesel - mid to low priced for this area. I fueled there today. Ray is getting their fuel from Sprague Energy, who just opened a blending terminal in the Port of Albany. I expect more stations in this area will be selling biodiesel blends soon. :ro)

A new law in South Carolina gives the station owners incentives to supply Bio 20. So they're clamboring aboard.

I heard a mechanic talking the other day about how much he loves BD. He's getting more pumps to rebuild (which he has to hammer apart) in order to get the lard out of the clearances. Anybody have any thoughts on this?

What additives will keep the Cloud point up with BD 20?

The mechanic is getting his work from the people who listen to some of the HIGHLY edited interviews they see on TV and go out and dump straight WVO, complete with waste animal fat oil, through a Mr Coffee filter and directly into their tanks.

I hear a lot more MISINFORMATION on the local news stations than good information... in fact... I don't think I've ever heard a BD story on the TV or radio that was more than 10% accurate.

They just don't have the time, desire, or airtime to get it right... perfect example, the Patriot Guard did a sendoff for a man returning to Iraq. ON CAMERA, the ride captain explained to the man that most of us were NOT vets, but were showing our support.
How did the story air on ABC? "The Patriotic Guard" is a group of bikers made up of Viet Nam vets...."

BD @ 3.08 gal. in Fort Wayne with Dino @3.09. To a couple of posts earlier, true BD will not clog up an IP. BD has a solvent like characteristic. The fuel system is cleaned out of the waxes and parafins that are in the system and those are trapped in the filter. While burning BD for the first few months one might go through a few more filters than usual.

Waste Vegetable Oil (WVO) is the stuff that is clogging up those IP's that mechanic was talking about. I have seen this happen to a few poeple, as I have had to tow them.

I heard a big truck driver on the Open Road channel on XM radio the other day talking about the ULS diesel and the supposed lubrication issues. He said he adds a quart of vegetable cooking oil to each tank (100 gals). He says he has had no problems with this. He apparently has been doing this for quite some time.

I told my 06 Dodge buddy about this since he is having a clatter issue with his injectors. He added a little more than a quart to each tank (aux and main) and after a few miles the clatter began going away. By the time he refueled it had stopped totally.

Vegetable oil is what BD is made of and seems to be a cheap lubricant that can be used in place of some of the other more expensive products.

That mechanic must be a great pump-banger by now, but he doesn't know jack about biodiesel. Biodiesel is NOT veggie oil! Biodiesel is a diesel fuel that is made to run in diesel engines and meets ASTM standards.

Unless you drive in a very cold climate you won't have to do anything to B20 to reduce its cloud point and certainly not in SC. According to a Univ. of Idaho study #2 has a cloud point of -22C (-7.5F) and B20 -15C (+5F). Here in central NC I use B80 all winter with no trouble (normal lows of 20's - 30's with snaps to 10's)

To answer your question though - just add #2 diesel to lower cloud point and pour point.

As previoulsy mentioned, filter clogging can come from WVO that hasn't been properly filtered.

In addition bio-deisel acts like a lubricant and a detergent. It will loosen the residue left in the tank and fuel lines from petro-deisel. This will initially cause the filters to clog more often until the fuel system has been cleaned out. The only damage will be if the filters burst allowing the particles and crap to go upstream to the injectors. So DO change your filters regularly, at least at first.

In addiion to the above, using biodeisel concentrations higher than B20 can cause damage in deisels manufactured before 1994, as the seals may not tolerate it and may deteriorate. After 1994 changes were made in fuel lines and o-rings.

What is the difference in all of the Bio fuels?? Can I run Bio fuels in a stock 2005 D-max ? Can I switch back and forth from bio fuels to reg. diesel or do I have to commit to one or the other? GM only officially sanctions up to B5, but there are many here running B100 without modifications and having no problems other than a slight reduction in MPG.

Honestly, with the new EPA crap, it's a wonder that they are not mandating B100, but that would hurt the oil companies.

I agree. Until the oil companies learn how to get into the corn business bio will continue to get bad press. I've been running B20 in mine since January of this year. They Sell B5, B20, B50 and B99 at the pump. Prices just took a jump at the beginning of the week to around 3.17 for all of them. I believe his bulk rates are better, but still haven't finished my bulk tank refurb.

I've put in about 35 gallons of B99, and have driven 350 miles. My fuel filter got clogged already after 80,000 miles on the dirty diesel.

Other than the smell, haven't noticed a difference. Just on principal alone, I like giving any extra money to big oil. Plus, maybe it's wishful thinking, but the truck seems a tad quieter on the bio diesel.

The B20 has been running cheaper than diesel here lately (FL). My truck runs quieter but I am seeing about 1/2 mpg increase not decrease. I got 19.3mpg on a trip to the camp last weekend.
B20 - $3.31/gal
Diesel - $3.39/gal

On the way back I found regular diesel for $3.27 in AL but around town here its been more expensive.

I have been using B100 for about a month and have had to change (one) two micron Baldwin fuel filter and thats because Biodiesel is a cleaner. No other problem has came up after a hundred gallons, but I will be taking a 5000 mile round trip starting tommorrow and I'll keep you informed. I will be running b100 for the first 1000 miles and then b20 from there on, due to lack of B100 stations along my route.

Anyone know of a good bio distributor in Michigan or Wisconsin. Im looking to buy drums or maybe a tote. Called a couple distributors in Wisconsin and they want WAY too much for B100. One quote I got was from an oil comany and they wanted about $5 a gallon.

Have another distributor from upper Michigan giving me a call back to see if he can sell to me in bulk, normally doesnt sell to individuals, only ships it down to some Indiana fuel plant, so should be interesting to see what price he comes in at.

Any help would be great.

Just got another quote from a place just south of Jackson Michigan. B20 is going for about $4.20 a gallon at the pump and if I wanted B100 in a 55 gallon drum it would be 5.94 a gallon. Said that price includes the drum. Those are highway fuel prices. He said he sells on-road and off-road bio, the off-road is dyed and doesn’t include some taxes, but the price only comes down to about $5 a gallon for off-road in the barrel.

So that’s all I can say is WOW. Am I missing something here? Why so expensive. The one oil company told me its because most restaurants have switched to soy for frying oils, also farmers are charging more because demand has gone up and supply is down.

Like the Nike commercial says... just do it. You should a) change your fuel filter, and b) be prepared to replace it again shortly ('cause Bio tends to clear out the fuel system and break free crud).

Bio is good for your truck - it lubricates things very, very well... though the stuff tends to have a lower cetane value ergo slightly lower mpg is likely. I've run several hundred gallons of B20 through my truck and have never had a moment's problem with it. Good luck!

I just filled up at the Flyin J truck stop (45&Richey rd) for $3.97

I thought bio-diesel was supposed to be MUCH cheaper than diesel???

Am i missing something, or is this the bio-diesel makers getting greedy? Are they making a HUGE profit?

Also, don't you get less miles per gallon when using bio?

I'd love to buy less foriegn oil, but I can't throw money away either

I understand what you are saying. FlyingJ usually have the lowest price in any town they are in. They are high volume seller. The BioD producer is not high volume and they tends to be the same price or about average of all the station in town. Consider it lucky if you can find it closer to where you live. I have to travel at least 20 to 30 miles to be close to one.

You guys might also find it interesting to know that Flying J has some of the lowest rated quality diesel fuel, even if they're one of the highest volume sellers. The TDI Forum has some info out there on brands and their fuel quality; I've been told the results were as follows:

BP
Chevron

Somebody else too...

I get my B100 from Houston Biodiesel at 723 N Drennan St.
The reason it is so expensive there is it is not a blend. It is B100 so they do not get the blending credit. It is still usually about ten cents per gallon less than I would pay for #2 out here in Katy. When I figure the fuel burnt getting there and back, the price is about a wash, but since I don't have to add anything for lubricity I think it is still cheaper for me.

IMHO Wouldn't a good thing to be doing right now is using bio when we can to help promote it so larger quantities will adventually be manufactured and the costs will be dropped. Even if it's .20 more per gallon that's $5 and that's if you run pure bio. I am lucky enough to have B10, B20, and B99 at a local station so I run B10 50% and #2 50% for B5 to help promote the growth of Bio. This is just what I do.

I used B20 when I could get it from a station 30 miles from my house and it was about the same as #2 diesel, sometimes less. They quit carrying it for about a year, now they have B5, so I'm back using it again. It was lower than #2 a week ago at $2.09. It went up to $2.27 when I filled up yesterday, but it's still only 2 cents more than Wal-Mart! Even if it's a little higher, I'd still rather spend money on bio, at least some farmers over here are getting some of my money.

In the Sacramento area, Propel Biofuels has 5-6 "Fuel Points" coexisting with Shell stations. The price started about 5 cents / gal higher than straight diesel but now is about 5-10 cents less.

I've been running it in the Beast and the TDI for about six months with no issues so far. B5 probably isn't enough to cause immediate filter clogging.

I believe Propel has many more stations in Washington State with higher concentrations (B20 / B99)

Hi, new here and was just passing through to research the effects on biodiesel in the Duramax. I stumbled upon this post and thought I would comment.

Stay away from Diesel Secret. Its junk, snake oil stuff. Just Google it to finds its effects.
Bio will always be a bit more because of what its made of, vegetable oil. There is more petro oil out there than there is veggie oil. Its like beach front property in California. There is only so much available and if a property should come up for sale, you can ask what you want for it because there will always be someone willing to buy it.
