I don't know, please read below for details.

If you don't want to read below, it is a temp sensor. :Nothing_f

And here I was thinking that was a fan for the electronic climate controls...and that the mic was located elsewhere....

You were right, it is for the Electronic Climate Control....NOT ONSTAR......It is actually a little fan with a temp probe for reading the air temp.....

Think it's the ambient noise mike for the stereo, and that the OnStar mike is on the overhead console.

Sometimes I can hear my fan before I start up. ...a little knock with the knuckles will quite it down.

so which is it? onstar mic or climate control sensor??bump-

T-Rex

Itty bitty fan w/sensor...

Mic is on the the left side of the overhead console--the black doohicky...

Me thinks....

my onstar sat phone works good but t-rex makes more sense-the black doohicky looks more like a mic-btw-I do have both-I just thought the climate sensor was on the dash....the little dome thing-

Little dome thing---we'll call it doodad is the sensor for auto headlights....guessin' again..

Cover it in broad daylight and see what you get.

The thing above your head is an intake for the climate conrol, it has a little fan in it.

On-star is not a sat phone and the mic for it is on the overhad console.

the dome thing on the dash is the light sensor for the automatic sentinal lights.

Hopefully that clears a few things up for some people.

The little dome thing is a sensor that tells the computer how light it is outside

onstar is not a sat phone??is it a cell phone?-my next question is,if there is only one climate sensor, and it is only on the drivers side, how does it know what the temp is on the passenger side?dual climate control is what they say-I thought onstar was sat??just wondering-michael....

Max Power
03-14-2005, 08:35 PM
On star is not sat it is through the cell system. It only uses sat for GPS.

I don't think there is a sensor on the passenger side. I don't think it measures the temperature between the two sides, only controls the temp it is sending to each side. I would assume it would mix to fast to accurately measure and control it. So it only controls the temperature of the air it is blowing on you.

The one above your head is for the OnStar satellite. The one to the left of the overhead console is the microphone for the Verizon cellular phone. Contrary to what you may have heard, the integrated phone does not use the OnStar satellite for communication. It uses the traditional cellular towers on Verizon's network. Can you hear me now?

thanks max,why does onstar charge so much, and It does work where cell phones do not.btw-I have used It several times in the woods-no cell sites for many miles-,again..just wondering, and appreitiate the feedback-about the dual climate thing, that sounds like a rippoff,if they claim it will actually give diff temps in both sides???

Push the OnStar blue button and you will be using the microphone above your head. This communication DOES use OnStar's satellite system. Push the White telephone button and you are using the microphone to the left of the overhead console and thus Verizon's cellular network.

Again you are mistaking. Both systems run through the same cellular system. They do not use satallites for comunications. All of your comunications to on-star are through cellular. No doubt about it.

They charge so much because they are reselling cellular providers services. Plust they offer certain conviences that cell phones don't. You'd have to contact on star for a better explination.

The reason on star works where your cellular doesn't is because it uses an external antenna which will help a lot. It also could use a different provider then your cellular phone so it will work where you cellular doesn't.

As for the dual climate control, it will give different temperatures for each side. I'm just saying it has limitations.

How You Stay Connected
Contact OnStar using the three-button system
Establish direct voice contact with an OnStar Advisor using the built-in microphone, cellular antenna in your vehicle, and cellular network
An Advisor can pinpoint your location using GPS technology. (Based on model availability.)
If your air bag deploys, a message is sent to the OnStar module in your vehicle. The OnStar module then contacts the OnStar Call Center.* (Based on model availability.)
OnStar module connects vehicle computer to OnStar via cellular antenna
Cellular antenna connects vehicle through cellular network

OnStar Equipment
All OnStar-equipped vehicles have one of three types of equipment, based on wireless network technologies:
Analog-only
Available on most 2003 model-year and earlier vehicles.
Analog/Digital-Ready
Available on select 2003 and 2004 model-year GM vehicles, which have been prepared for conversion to analog/digital (dual-mode) equipment when it is offered
Analog/Digital (Dual Mode)
Available on select 2004 and future OnStar-equipped GM vehicles

GPS Technology
How GPS Works Global positioning system (GPS) satellite technology measures how long it takes a radio signal from a satellite to reach a vehicle, and then calculates distance using that time. To get the most accurate vehicle location:
OnStar uses measurements from four satellites.
GPS satellites are launched into very precise orbits and are constantly monitored by the Department of Defense.
OnStar uses a 6-channel receiver.

The onstar will work where a hand held cell phone wont, because of a difference in power. The Onstar is probably a 3 watt system vs the .5 watt of a hand held.

And I 2nd Max Power, it is an ambient air temp sensor in the headliner above your head.

GMCSID
03-14-2005, 09:05 PM
There are 5 air temp sensors inside the truck. The one in the headliner is the inside air temp sensor and ther are 4 in the ducts. L/upper and lower and R/upper and lower. Auto HVAC uses all of these for auto operation.

The OnStar Vehicle Communication Interface Module has 2 modems inside. One for cellular info and one for GPS data only. All calls are cellular. The mic is on the center console or in the rear view mirror for some vehicles.

You can use your onstar for a hands free that will use your current verizon wireless plan. Just call onstar from your truck to set it up. Has to be on a 2004.5 and newer, equpied with Onstar Gen 6

Max Power is right on the money with the Onstar. Even Onstar does not understand how it all works. They told me it works anywhere in N America, NOT TRUE. I live in the Yukon and the only place it works is in Whitehorse.

I will not be renewing as it is to much for such a little coverage area.

I have my onstar hooked up to my Verizon plan, I pay an extra 10 bucks a month for it. It then shares minutes with my main cell phone. It works great, although the coverage isn't any better than my hand held phone hooked to an external antenna. They will both drop a call within an 1/8 of a mile of each other on the interstate.

My question is do you need to have the ONSTAR subscription to link your minutes from Verizon to the truck?

Thanks,
JJ

yes, and you have to have the digital equipment in your truck(dual mode). if you have a 04 you may have, if you have 05 you do.:ro)

I've heard that Onstar is "analog" cellular, not "digital" cellular. Also, as stated above it operates on a higher wattage=longer range. This is substantiated by people that still have "bag phones", you know who you are.

On a side note, has anyone ever been listening to the radio and a "phone" starts ringing thru the speakers? This has happened to me several times. Is it some kinda Onstar test ring or what?

Yeah, some of the 2004.5 trucks and 05's are supposed to already have the digital equipment necessary. For us others, it will require a hardware upgrade.
OnStar does not have any info about the hardware upgrade at this time. They said to keep in touch, look at their website for more info before they change over to digital sometime late next year or early 2007.

I didnt know I was opening such a big can of worms.
My next question is if you have Verizon and pay the extra how does it determine which phone rings with incoming call? I currently have nextel and love the convenience of two-way but price is ridiculous for the service you get not that any of the rest are any better.

You have another phone number for your truck, then you can set up your cell phone to forward the call to the truck.
