I just bought a used Silverado with the 6.6 Duramax and I have some questions that someone might be able to help with.

1. I do not have the engine oil life feature. How long before routine oil changes?
I've heard every 5000 miles.

2. The dealer changed the oil a couple thousand miles ago and it seems a bit runny and smells of fuel. As far as I can tell, there is no smoke coming out of the exhust on start up or during operating loads.

Ive been changing my own oil on gas engines for about 20 years but have no experience with the diesel engine. Any insight would be helpfull.

If the oil smells like fuel, take it back to the stealer.. It's injector time!!

I agree about the smell of diesel in oil.

People say 5,000 miles for oil changes, IF using mineral oil. Can run longer on synthetic oil. People also recommend a Fumoto valve. Screws in where the drain plug is for oil. Works great if you have a 4X4 with skid plates.

Also change the fuel filter every 10,000 miles. In the Do It Yourself section, there is a post on changing the fuel filter.

Anymore questions, just feel free to ask. Lots of knowledgable people around.

Thanks, I'm sure I'll have some more questions as I learn more.

I change oil at 7500 miles and the fuel filter at 15000 miles.

Hey marchand, it sounds like its time for injectors. Insist the replace all 8.

I could be wrong but I thought all hd trucks have the oil life monitor. I think all it just consists of a sensor on the air intake sys. that determines time and air flow to guesstimate oil changes. Mine takes about 15 to 20K to ever light up so I dont pay it much attention.

The current generation of GM trucks all have the oil life monitor. However, it takes into account several factors on the operation of your engine to determine when it will illuminate, such as average rpm, total miles, total operating time and the number of start-ups. It has nothing to do with the air intake.

Your probably right. My main point was that it actually does not "monitor the oil". It uses others things to determine oil changes.
