I have a 700R in my 83 truck. It was supposed to be new 1 year before I bought the truck a few weeks ago. Today while running to the steel yard I start blowing white smoke out the back. Turns out it is leaking alot of tranny fluid out the front of the transmission I cant really tell exactly where but it appears to be in the center where the torque converter slides in.
Any Idea what would cause this on a 1 year old tranny? And what the problem is going to be.

sounds like the pump seal is leaking they are known to blow the seal out or the pump bushing may have walked out and hit the seal or the converters have been known to crack around the bolt mounting pads or around the neck of the converter all posabilities require the removal of the trans to repair

I got the tranny down today, What would cause the front seal to blow out? It is the same one that goes around the torque converter. It will slip almost all the way back into place. Is it possible that theis is my only problem or would something else have to be wrong for this to occur?

it is fairly comon to blow the seal out when we rebuild these trannys we usualy drill the drain back hole to a 1/4 inch there is also a retainer that gm put on the later years to help stop this any trans shop should have one you should also use locktite on the outside of the seal make sure the pump bushing hasen't walked out .

I pulled tha pan today, Magnet is covered with clutch material, but I have seen much worse. Maybee 1/32 thick on the magnet. Oil smells and looks new. everything is looking up if I can just get the front seal issue solved.

if the seal is outthe bushing should be flush or slightly back from the flat part behind the seal not sticking out at all

Last question I noticed that the wire that comes down to my tranny had pulled out of the plug. Which hole is the corect one to get the lockup working again?

I can tell you, but I have to crawl under my Suburban tonight and look. I can't remember, off the top of my head. Maybe someone else does. I'll try to look tonight and check this thread tomorrow. Sorry, old age, you know! Fred

Finally got it all back together. Total actual work time was less than 5 hours. Of course it took me 2 weeks to find 5 hours to work on it.
No aparent problems other than a slight vibration at 65- 70 mph,,, I think that is gonna be in the drive shaft though. The universal joint did not look all that good.
