: starter kill ? in a 98 gmc diesel
leicam7 10-07-2008, 03:24 PM Hello , new member here, i have a quick question to ask of you. i have just purchased a 98 gmc c3500 cube van with a 6.5 liter engine.
when not in use i want to park the truck in my shops yard, but i would like to disable the starter, as an anti-theft deterrent.
since i would only use this truck maybe once a week or so, would pulling the starter relay be a good way of killing the engine. and putting it back in when i need to drive it?
if it is, where would the starter relay be located. in the engine compartment? which one is the starter relay.
thanks for your anticipated cooperation.
jake
Green Machine 10-07-2008, 05:06 PM Don't think there is a relay on the truck, there is a starter solenoid...
Don't think you want to remove it or reconnect it because it is on the starter itself and not the easiest to get to

^^ i still need to put a new solenoid and stuff in this starter and sell it :)
Brooklyn tow 10-07-2008, 05:42 PM There is a relay in the under hood fuse box.......flip the cover over, there is a map/legend of what is what.
Jess_sr 10-07-2008, 07:38 PM Hide a switch for the Neutral safety wire to cut the power to the starter solenoid.;)

leicam7 10-07-2008, 08:11 PM thanks for all the advise guy , i think im gonna pull the ecm fuse and add the switch for the neutral safety cut.
my shop is located off the main street, so i have to kinda be redundant, just to be safe.
super superrrrrr website, you guys are great
thanks

Joey D 10-07-2008, 08:32 PM What ever fuse you pull get a new one and drill a small hole through the old one to cut the fuse and reinstal it. This way nothing looks out of place
BigBlueChevy 10-07-2008, 09:24 PM go to your Lift pump. on the outlet side cut the line and put in a valve.
when your not driving it turn the valve off. closed valve, no fuel. nobody will think of checking for something like that. it'll also save you the difficulty of if you happen to accidnetally misplace the fuse. :p besides: all you have to do is go to the starter solenoid and cross the 2 terminals with a screwdriver or something. its how we start my familys old 72 CASE tractor. cause the starter switch never worked. we just did that.
leicam7 10-08-2008, 08:08 PM great idea joey, bb chev,
will do, cost me nothing, have all the parts for this, lol, i printed these out, and gave them to my brother to read,
now he's gonna treansfer these ideas to our bobcats and forklifts.
i am very greatful to all of you, one quick message and i have several great ideas. instead of installing an expensive alarm.
thanks again guys.:D

BlueBurby1 10-08-2008, 08:41 PM you could put a positive disconnect in the main battery line....or you could put a positive disconnect on the starter...or a kill switch in the fuel solenoid power line, or a kill switch to the ECM, anything that is ABSOLUTELY required for the vehicle to start...can have a kill switch/valve installed...in a hidden location...to prevent start up...i've looked into this in case i want to install push button start
leicam7 10-09-2008, 11:36 AM blueburby1, yes we were actually thinking of hiding a disconnect switch for the battery, this along with the other ideas mentioned. we have had one truck stolen (94 dually with a 6.5L). so thats why we need to do a few things instead of just one.
thanks

pgguru 10-09-2008, 12:21 PM pull the ECM fuse
Will that cause it to have to relearn every time?
BlueBurby1 10-09-2008, 02:38 PM pulling the ECM fuse COULD cause permanent damage if done over and over again...thats why i would reccomend fuel and starter/main power shut offs. neutral safety switch relocation, there's various ways to do what you want here...just get some wiring diagrams and have fun
