: What is the oil pressure supposed to be?

I have a 2002 Chevy Silverado CC 4x4 with the Duramax/Allison, 33k miles. The dealer just replaced the engine oil sending unit (?) because I was complaining about high oil psi. Basically my gauge was reading 80psi almost all the time. Now with the new sending unit, I'm getting readings of 75 - 80+ psi (warm engine, driving 55 mph and @ 1700 rpm's). It does go down to around 44 psi at idle, other than that the psi stays above 70.

Simply put ... what should these beasts be putting out for oil pressure?

Thanks,
Johnm

That sounds about right to me. The range will change based on the type of oil
you are using, engine temp, and rpm. My 01 runs around 70-75 at 1500-1800rpm,
and at idle it drops to 40. (5-40 syn oil, engine at operatign temp)

I have heard that the newer engines have lower oil pressure, due to a recalibration
of the regulator.

Mine pegs it at 80psi cold. It runs around 70psi warm.

Mine runs just south of 60psi warm at 2000 rpm. just south of 30psi warm at idle. Cold start 80 psi. I use Rotella synthetic oil.

Mine's as follows:
80 psi COLD
40 psi Hot idle
75 psi Hot on hwy.

Mine runs at about 60 psi when warm and at 1700-2000 RPM. Cold start 80 PSI.

65 psi Hot on hwy

Yep, LLY's run much lower:

70 Cold
25 Hot idle
55 Hot on Hwy

My 02 lb7 runs 75 cold during warm up, 40 at idle and fluctuate up higher with throttle. It ran 20 psi, when hot cold or doing 75mph accelerating up a hill when the injectors went south. Luckily I only ran it for two days before I got it in the shop. I guess the fuel does build pressure like the thicker oil.

Starting with the 2003 model, the oil pressure regulator was changed to reduce oil pressure. My 2003 LB7 typically runs, with 5w-40 Rotella, up to 90 psi when cold, 60 at idle when cold, 60 when warm, and 25-30 at idle when warm.

I guess I need to retrain myself as to what "normal" oil pressure is now.

Thanks for the replys.
