What year is your truck?

I have an '02 and it's only analog.

But... I believe the new(er) trucks have digital systems. I think Verizon offers packages where you can bundle your OnStar minutes with your regular cellular minutes.

Good luck --

OnStar told me that my 2004.5 was not digital ready and the GM dealer told me that there is no conversion available (yet?). :(

I have let OnStar expire and am installing GlobalStar which handles sat and two cell lines.:D

GlobalStar huh? I work for the company that used to build those phones. Stopped production on them a few years back.

As I understand it GlobalStar is a phone and not a system. You can unstall a car kit for hands free but how does it support 2 phones unless you install 2 kits?

Mike330R - Globalstar owns the satellites and is the service provider. Qualcom makes the phone. The Qualcom 1600 phone has both sat and CDMA cell functionality. I am paying Globalstar for the sat connection (time, etc.). You can also have up to two cell number assigned to the phone and program it to try using one or the other first. If there is no signal it reverts to trying the call on the other(s). I got the sat phone because I spend a lot of time poking around in very remote desert by myself and I'm not as young and dumb as I used to be. Not too sure about the latter. I'm also heading for the (very) outbackof Australia.

I have a Verizon Wireless number tied to a much more compact Motorola cell. the sat phone stays in the truck. Voicemail is accumulated if I'm not answering. When I'm heading to the desert I stop at a Verizon store and have them move the cell number from the Motorola to the Qualcom (free). When I ger back to civilization I have them switch it back.

The value of the car kit is that it has an outside antenna and uses power from the vehicle. The phone eats power and needs a direct line of sight to a sat for it to work.

Sounds good freddyo. I have used the phone many times out in BFE and it's very handy.

What do you do out in the desert? And what is OffRoadEngineering Idle Control?
