: Muffler or no muffler?

My computer is showing 16.4 mpg. I have my programmer set on performance and keep my rpm's to no more than 2k. Most of my driving is around home and town.

It has been on 16.4 for almost a tank of fuel now so I would say that's where it's going to stay, more or less.

I was wondering if deleiting my muffler and installing a air intake would inprove my mileage.

Don't get me wrong. I just got rid of my 00 superduty and the best mileage I ever got was 12 and I am not complaining, but I see posts that show mileage in the 20's.

Thank's

Jeff.

First of all.. hand calc your milage. Programer+DIC= confused owner. ie: the DIC is wrong if you use a programer.

I am running a MBRP 5" no cat or muffler and BD triple dog on Extreme with 305/65/17's and avg 17-18mpg all around but 70-75% hwy.

Buy just removing the muffler you will see no gain... or very little. The cat is where the restriction is.

Thank you for your response. For a while, I was starteing to think that my question was a dumb one.

I hand calculate my mileage after every fill up. I set the pump noz. on the slowest setting and round the amount up to the next $$ after it shut's off.

When I reset my my DIC after the purchase of my truck and some warrenty work on 4 injectors, my DIC reading was 14.2 and my hand calculated mileage was was 13.8. This was on the tow setting.

Since going to performance setting, my mileage has went from DIC 16 (hand calc 15.9) and currently DIC 16.4 (hand calk 16).

I have taken one trip in my truck to Knoxville and back (250 mi round trip) I set my cruise at 70 and was in the extreme setting. My mileage went from 16.3 to 16.4 and it hasent changed.

Thanks again.

Jeff.

man idk what to tell you. i know how you feel about being confused though. i set my quad on 90 and took a 3 hrs trip on the highway. and the end of the trip, DIC was tellin me 20.1 and i was so dam excited...hand calced to 18.4

i read somewhere that the more you add with the tuner the more off the DIC will be

only think i can think of is make sure your tires are aired up enough. rolling resistance kills the milage around town, but at highway speeds its mostly aerodynamics according to diesel power mag

Ive got that mag also. Have you heard anything about the flex-a-lite fans.

I can see how they would help the mpg's and HP as my fan sound's like a airboat sometimes.

I am going to start a new post to see if anyone has checked out one of these fans.

Thank's

I straight piped my truck a few weeks ago and does she sound good. i didnt get any mileage increase. but straight pipe is well worth it.

Also rethink the way you fuel up. I fast fill until the pump clicks off. Then I slow fill until I get fuel..not foam just below the threads for the cap. this takes a extra minute or two but this way you start with the same amount every time.

Also I agree with the tire pressure, and regular oil changes are about all you can do.

Also how many miles are on your truck?

If your muffler is straight thru which I`m sure it is,you won`t have any gain on mileage, just a toned down sound.
The intake if it is still stock with the stock airfilter,I feel just going with a aFe OEM or similar drop in airfilter would work well and with the programmer it would definitly help a little.
People I know that went extreem on a complete air intake V.S. drop in OEM saw hardly any gain between the 2 intakes in mpg.
About $70-$80 OEM vs $300-$500 complete intakes.
Unless your racing the truck that is a pretty big difference.
My opinion only from feed back I have recieved.
