The other day I was driving in freezing rain with my '03. One time that I hit the wipers, the right one was frozen down but the left side broke loose and worked. I stopped and broke the right side loose but it seems like the drive mechanism has sheared a shear pin or is slipping. Now when I turn them on, both wipers move up about 6" on the windshield then flop back down.
Is there a shear or slip mechanism on the wiper drive? Or have I broken something?

Thanks

There are tapered splines on the shaft that the wiper arm bolts to. Remove the plastic cover on the nut, remove the nut, remove the arm, clean off all of the aluminum bits out of the splines, and re-assemble. There are small marks on the lower part of the windshield to aid in positioning the arm properly.

This happened to me the first time my truck's wipers were used. It was just a matter of tightening the nut, but quite disconcerting on a brand new vehicle.

This was exactly right, they are working perfectly now.
