I took a trip from Fl to NC and back last week towing my 6x12 enclosed trailer with 3 motorcycles in it. I expected to get better mileage with the D-max van than I did with my van with a 5.7, But over all I got about .5 mpg better. I averaged between 11.4 to 12.8 mpg running 65 to 70. What I did like was the ease that the D-max went through the mountains.

Seems a little low, but what did the trailer weigh, and how tall? I've gotten 14 pulling our 4100lb empty weight camper. Just towed a wrecked express van for a friend, left my house picked him and trailer up, drove 120 miles out to get the wrecked van, 120 miles back, and back home empty, 15.5 for the entire trip. Figure that was 7000 ish lbs.

The problem with the enclosed trailers is lack of aerodynamics. That hurts more than the weight you were hauling.

The enclosed trailer is 8'2" from the ground to the top, so less than 1.5 ft taller than the back of the van. The trailer weighed right at 3290#, the van was about 8500# so a total of 11790#. I figured I would get 15mpg or so. I was a bit shocked when I saw 11.4mpg at 68 to 70mph. I even slowed down to 62 to 65(felt like a snail) for a tank to get 12.8mpg.
