: when should i use the tow controll???
whatsnext2500 10-04-2008, 02:01 PM I've seen on YOUTUBE when guys race there trucks they have the trailer light on on there dash. I have a 2005 6.6 turbo diesel duramax w/allison trans , I also have BANKS ram air and scoop and banks exhaust, (no lift stock tires) I it ok to race with the trailer light on (button on shifter knob) ? I noticed it shifts alot faster but i dont need to blow the truck up (lol) If anyone can give me any ideas that would be great thankyou , Brian
DURAtotheMAX 10-04-2008, 03:49 PM you can run it whenever you want. Not going to hurt anything. Doesnt matter if you are towing anything or not, some people just like the way it shifts and drives better in tow/haul mode. I personally love it and drive around with it in tow/haul all the time.
ben
I do the same thing as well, slows down much better
subman631 10-04-2008, 05:39 PM Don't think it makes much difference when you are racing, at WOT the allision locks the TC in 2nd gear anyway. I've raced both ways, really don't see much if any difference. I do use it to tow, so since I race my tow truck I don't race it in T/H, I figure the tranny has enough to figure out the way it is.:D
kcb37 10-05-2008, 06:50 AM Do you get better mileage driving around in t/h?

Worse - the torque converter is locked all the time (or so it was explained to me).
countryredneck 10-05-2008, 10:29 AM i noticed worse mileage to, rpms stay higher, but much more fun to drive :ro)
robbieyukon 10-05-2008, 11:20 AM The tow mode keeps the motor at max torque. Really helps with the slowing down part too.
kcb37 10-05-2008, 11:57 AM It dosen't lock the TC all the time, without TH it locks in the upper gears at higher speed, just like any other tranny.
In TH mode, it locks in lower gears at lower speeds along with the higher gears.
I was just kinda hoping that cause it didn't have so much slip thru the TC that it would be more fun and a little better mileage.
Also having the TC locked more of the time keeps temps down as you loose a lot of TC slip, which causes a lot of heat.

Yes, but as far as racing goes at WOT doesn't matter if it's in T/H or not, will lock in second gear. Pretty sure that's the way it works.
Rob from BC Canada 10-05-2008, 01:54 PM If you're thinking of mileage, towing a light or medium load up hills, sometimes your RPM's in tow/haul will be lower, exactly because the converter locks up in the lower gears, so that is better.
One thing you will notice, if you keep an eye on transmission temperature, it will be much lower in tow/haul than regular mode, again, because converter slippage is reduced, less friction, less heat. In 05 dmaxes, every bit of heat you can reduce helps.
However, when you hit flat areas, it will stay in the lower gears much longer, so RPM's are higher and mileage drops.
I switch mine in and out frequently, to suit the grades and speeds I'm running, to get the RPM's I want.
subman631 10-05-2008, 02:26 PM I really like the 6 speed with the manual mode. I tow in T/H and in manual mode. Have a 36' goose neck enclosed trailer. I drive by the EGT gauge, with a bigger tune the truck wants to pull in a higher gear then I like do to the higher exhaust temps. I watch the gauge and if it's starts creeping a little higher than I like I click it down a gear.
JWLLY3500 10-23-2008, 09:49 PM What EGT's do you consider safe?
I personally like to keep any maintained temperature below 1200. If it want to stay at 1200 or higher I lock out overdrive.
