: running with plow question ....
Pinzgauer 10-04-2008, 07:42 AM both engine and oil temps get really hot when driving on the road with my plow. That's due to the decreased air flow I'm sure. Now I have to move my plow about 150 miles. Do you guys have any suggestion on how to best position my V-Plow .... blade in V position, right, left, straight, high or low to the ground?
Thanks for your input .........
RI Chevy Silveradoman 10-04-2008, 09:43 AM Moved to the truck uses section! Blizzardplowman, this is for you! ;)
RedLMM 10-04-2008, 10:08 AM is it possible for you to put the plow in the bed of the truck?...we bought a plow a few years back used the guys lift to put it in the bed...then our skid steer took it out when we got it home...
Pinzgauer 10-05-2008, 08:23 AM ... or I could put it on my trailer .... but I'd like to avoid that if at all possible.
thanks for the responds ...
blizzardplowman 10-05-2008, 02:53 PM In the vee, low as practial to the ground.. trans temp will climb but as long as you stay in the normal range you are fine. I have ran 100 miles or so wil no issue. My vendor do it all the time when they show off new products...

X2 on that, keep the blade as low as possible so you can get more air over the blade and through the grille/rad. I have ran my 8' straight blade for 40 miles on the throughway at 65-70mph with no issues.
Pinzgauer 10-06-2008, 07:28 AM thanks for all the answers.
So what are the max temps both engine and trannny without problems?
blizzardplowman 10-06-2008, 02:04 PM Trans 240 ish, engine fan is on about 212...should not see much over that unless you are pushing it hard.....
Pinzgauer 10-06-2008, 03:39 PM thank you .........
ColbyColorado04 10-06-2008, 03:42 PM Just put it on the trailer. You'll get better econ and not have to worry about temp. I hauled mine from OH on the trailer. used a engine hoist to get it off the trailer.
Jason Duramax 10-06-2008, 03:58 PM I've also run mine low to the ground in V with good results, but in 150 miles I'd say you have time to try all combos for a while. Let us know if you find a better way.
Just food for thought, I had bought an old plow truck from my bro in law, he drove it a long way to bring it to me, so he had someone load it in the bed w/a hoist. I had nothing at my house to get it off, so we backed up to a tree in the grass, tied a chain around it and the plow, and yanked it off. Kinda butch (it was a beater) but it worked. Soft ground didn't hurt a thing.
csx5197 10-06-2008, 05:15 PM 150 Miles, Yeah run it in V position, and keep it low to the ground, if it hits the ground a lot, lift it up just a little bit, you'll be amazed at how having your plow all the way up to halfway up or less will drop the temps. Yeah it still might get warm, so just run with the heat on, doesn't have to be on High either, but definitely will help keep the temps down. I used to drive 70 miles round trip with a straight blade, so I have an idea on what to do. GM has always had an issue with their cooling system when a plow is on the front. They never put a big enough fan in, even with the plow prep.
Q101ATFD 10-06-2008, 05:26 PM Run the plow in whatever position you are most comfortable with - the fan will give you plenty of cooling power. Just stay under 60MPH because the fan clutch will not engage over that speed. I just drove a plow 100 miles from Indy to Cincy last week and 60MPH is the magic number. I tried up, down, left, right - and no position affected the cooling.
Pinzgauer 10-13-2008, 10:11 AM so here is what happened on my trip. Please note that I am only talking about my specific experience that day with temps in the 70s. My plow is a Fisher ExtremeV. I am reporting what happened to me with my conditions and I am not disputing anything that was said by others.
First let me say that there was almost no correlation between trans temp and engine temps. When the tranny temp climbed steadily throughout the trip, the engine temp stayed mostly pegged at normal 210.
1. Running plow in V what better than straight. But only in a semi V position. Complete V increased the engine temp
2. Running MY plow low to the ground increased both temps
3. Huge difference in both temps between running 65 and 55 mph.
4. Highest temps were 245 for engine and 207 for tranny. This occurred when the outside temp was higher in a geographic area plus on inclines on the highway.
5. Running off highway at 40 - 50 mph all temps were normal.
My conclusion from this trip:
I had to find the sweet spot for the plow position. Mine has half V 1/3 down. Running in that position at 55 mph my temps very normal for 90% of the trip. Everything over 60 mph forget.
Again just reporting facts as they appeared on my trip.
thank you .........
craiggenz 10-13-2008, 11:49 AM depends what kind of v plow. with my old boss, i barely had it in the v and about 4-6" off the ground, no problems. some v blades yu will notice that the back of the plow (outside sdeges) drag if the thing isnt high enough. with my straight blades, i always keep them low and angled all the way to one side, seems to wok the best for me.
