Okay, This Is The Third Belt In 53k That Squeals So Bad I Feel Embarrassed To Drive It Around. What's The Deal Does Having A Proggrammer Chew Up Belts From The Extra Power Or Is There An Upgraded Belt That'll Fix This Noisy Problem? By The Way I Tried Three Different Belt Dressings As Directed And It Made It Worse!

Is it just on start up and for 4 or 5 minutes after? On a humid day I get a noise from the belt until things warms up and then it disappears. Belt dressings are not a cure.

If you're on your third belt, and you still have the squeal, your problem may be elsewhere.
How about a bearing on the alternater, belt tensioner, or pully?

I have posted this before, because it worked for my truck, and for a few others.
Remove the belt, and clean all of the grooves on the PS pump, alt,
crank, etc. Use soap, and a tooth brush. You will find a black "gunk" in the
grooves. Get the surfaces clean. (yes it's a PIA to do) Clean the belt too, or use a new one.

My truck drove me nuts, until I tried this. It sounded like a screaming banshee!
You could barely hear the radio, and I was sure it was a bearing or bad alt.
I read this method on a forum, and it does work!

I tried the dressing spray (2 different types) and they made it worse. Yes, it would
stop, but the noise came back every few weeks.

After this procedure, it started to chirp and few months later, and I washed them
down again. It's been 6 months now, with no noise at all.

Even a gatorback belt did not help !

Of course there could be other problems, like the tensioner, etc...........

That's an interesting way of stopping belt squeal 2loud. I'd have never thought that would solve the problem but hey, go with what works i guess. I second modified's suggestion, it could be something other than the belt if your on the third one like that.

You might check into the possibility of an improperly machined power steering pump bracket. Do a search, lots of talk about it.

I would have to agree with 2loud, above. That proceedure is standard duty among snowmobiler's that are into clutch tuning. While clutches in sleds rarely squeal, they really slip; worse when the sheeve faces are dirty. As 2loud said, wash the belt- in very warm, soapy water. Even new belts. This takes off the parting compound, a dressing, from newly manufactured belts. Best of all,it's free (except your time). Then, if you're still getting the squeal, you've eliminated the belt as the source. 'Nuff said. BB

I had 8 belts and 3 tensioners replaced in less than 40K, I cleaned the pulleys as mentioned and have had zero issues since. 55K now.

wow thanks for the responses! In terms of working on my on truck and removing the belts.....I'm not quite the guy that should be behind the wrench:badidea:. Maybe cleaning the belt would be something the stealer should offer.....or can I count on a quick shot of belt dressing while them saying they cleaned it and the $199 dollar bill just for it to start squealing the next week:exactly: ! Oh well thanks fellas always there in a pinch!

I suffered with the squeal as well. I also just had my water pump replaced as well which either one could've been causing the squeal because it was dripping fluid on the belt or the bearing in the pump could've been doing the squeaking. I know the pump isn't directly connected to the belt since it's gear driven, but my squeal hasn't returned.
