Here is what's going on ...... Apparently when the suburban sits like overnight the fuel is somehow leaking into the engine causing air in the line. When we go to start it it acts as though it is flooded. We have to floor it to get it started and get lots of black smoke . It will run a little then no matter what we do it dies . Then we try to start it again it's like it's not getting any fuel. My husband checked the IP selinoid and that is working.
He bleeds the fuel line and then it'll run . Let it sit overnight and it's the same thing all over again. He has changed the fuel pump and the fuel filter.
He bypassed the fuel filter and put a regular clear car filter in the line to see what was going on. We got it started and ran it . Ran fine. When we shut it off the filter was almost full of fuel. Went out the following morning and there was little or no fuel in the filter and we had the same starting problems.
Any suggestions - advice is soooo appreciated. This has had us in a tizzy for over a month now.

can't leak into the engine so you can rule that out. When you say he bleeds the fuel line and then it will run, are you talking about the bleed on the filter base? If doing this makes it run, then you are drawing air. Need to drop the tank and repair/replace the fuel sender or repair/replace the fuel lines between the tank and the lift pump.

Like TDG said you have an air leak in your fuel feed line from the tank. Start by tightening all hose clamps on the fuel lines. A tiny air leak will allow the fuel in the line to siphon back into the fuel tank and give you a hard start condition.:grd:

Texas was right ! The guys found a leak back at the top of the fuel tank. Made an opening in the floor and repaired it from above.
I hate giving up on my 89 GMC Suburban . I love large vehicles especially since we live in snow country. Plus the fuel milage is great compared to a lot of other larger vehicles.
Thank you soooooo much Texas - you were a big help and we appreciate it !!!!!

If it has the Stanadyne 80 fuel filter rub your fingers along the base of the filter and see if it is wet..if so the filter is leaking.. Also the check valve on the top of the injector pump on the return fuel line may the blocked remove witha a 9/16 wrench and check. The truck is loosing its prime in the fuel system because of the leaking filter. ttks Chuck
