I need new tires and am looking at BF Goodrich Long Trail T/A
LT265/75R-16D1 120R. Anybody have any experience with these. I tow a 12000lb 5'er. Are these going to handle the weight. I don't want to go too big because I don't want to hurt the mileage. Any other tire I should look at?

I would go with the 285's.

What did the 285's do to your mileage?

I wouldn't go to 285's if you want the best mileage. You will get more MPG with the 265's. The 285's will give you more weight rating but the bigger sidewalls will also add a little more of a squirrelly feeling.
I currently using the Goodyear silent armors and don't have any complaints. I have had the BFG all terrains in the past and had problems with belt separation.
If I were you I would look at the Michelin LTX M/S.

I was also looking at the goodyear silent armor, how long have you had them on your truck and how are they wearing?

I have had the Goodyear's on the truck for little more than a year. I have just under 30,000 miles on them. Without measuring I would say I have about 2/3 tread left. I see no problem with another 25-30 thousand. After another 25,000 they will be fine on the highway, but not enough tread left to consider them all terrains.
I am also running 265's on 8.5" wide hummer rims. A lot of people say this combination looks too small. The thing I like about it is, I don't have to air down (lower weight rating) to keep from wearing out the middles. I have even wear all the way across the tread.
Next year I am confident I will be replacing these with the same tire. I do a lot of highway driving, but almost every day I get the truck off road. The Silent Armor's are an all terrain tire but are very quiet on the highway and advertise as a 50,000 mile tire.

I am getting 19mpg and not taking it easy, mix 50/50 city highway. I have had them on the truck for 25,000 so far and have not one complaint. They are wearing great with no problems.

I would look for an "E" rated tire.

I would look for an "E" rated tire.
Agreed. Since you are going to be towing, just to be safe.

I see they have an E rated tire in the Silent Armor's. They are called pro rated or something like that. Do you think these are better than the BFG's?

What matters is what your rear axle weight is with the trailer on and loaded. Of that 12K, how much of it will be transfered to the truck. The BFGs should handle the weight. I would not go with 285's. They are way to big for stock wheels, and can affect mileage, and bottom end power. Not sure what the max load for the BFGs are, but you should be able to go to there website and find out.
The Michelin LTX M+S in that size is a LRE load tire, and would handle that as well, if you are on the highway mostly.
Good Luck.

I work at a tire shop part time while goin to school and the load range of the tire matters especially when towing heavy loads. Ltxis a great tire but I have seen it wear fast on trucks like ours...but this also can be from lack of rotation or other causes. The S/ARs are a great traction tire and usually has a 50,000 mile warrenty tagged to it. The long trails I think I the best buy because they get good traction and wear and usually are less expensive then the tires mentioned. Good luck with what ya decide to get.

If you get a 265 load range E tire. The weight rating will be the same no matter what brand you pick.
