seems the LLY engines have had some restrictions that hinder MPG similiar to the LB7. I wonder if these can be countered or removed.... There is no emssion mandate in Pennsylvania.. not sure on other states.

You mean like killing the cat and disabling the EGR system? If so you're at the right place. Best thing you could do is search on these two topics and be ready to read for a long time.

Yep, pretty simple procedures, but they may cost you a few dollars to perform.

but would they offer significant iimprovements in fuel economy....

What's the legality of removing emissions control devices (Cat, EGR) when the truck is registered in a state where Diesels are emissions exempt?

Nothing, as long as you don't get caught.
;) Mine are removed, I don't get any codes, and really, my buddy (that owns the shop where I get inspected) helped me straight pipe mine, so he would never say anything (cause we straight piped his 4500 d max a few days later :ro) ) so there is no reason for any body to look underneath or question it. It says on everybody registration card in PA now "Emissions required Diesel vehicles exempt." and I know very few people are aware that my truck even had a cat.

Here in MO, safety inspections are usually done at dealers, and Emissions at the state run stations... When I moved here, I just had to get an exemption certificate for my truck, because A) It's over 8600 (I think) GVW, and B) It's a Diesel. I THINK even a 2500HD gasser would be exempt.

I would LOVE to get rid of the cat and EGR and uncork the exahust, but am a little hesitant due to the legality (or lack thereof) of doing it, even though I live in an emissions exempt state.

big angry -- did removing these items improve your MPG at all... how about performance?

Not so much the mpg (that I noticed anyway) but there did seem to be a slight improvement in acceleration. It seemed to get up to speed without as much pedal. Plus, the cool factor from the sound was worth it alone. I think if I hadn't done that (4" exhaust) that my EGT's probably would've been higher when I was running the Edge in my truck.

I removed my cat this weekend and blocked my EGR and I like it so far. The turbo whistle is more audible and it also spools quicker. It is also a great feeling knowing that sooty crap isn't going back into my engine and that I am getting lower EGTs. I live in Louisiana so we do not have emission inspections, and I do not get a SES light, only a blocked EGR code when I plug in the predator but the fingerstick should fix this once it comes in. Hopefully I can find a cool performance oriented dealer so I can leave all this stuff on once I bring it in for warranty work.

65hpThank you for you speedy reply. The reason I asked is I recently purchased a predator, and have not installed a program yet. Did you start with the 45 or go immediately to 65hp, or what would you recommend a newbie to try first?

Melvin

Go for 65, I am running 65 on mine and like it I am also still running stock exhaust so I got some gauges too, after the tranny learns it will be good to go, They (Diablo) actually suggest 65 for fuel economy, if you can stay out of the throttle it might have better fuel economy I couldn't tell you. I think I would get a pyro as I can get the egts pretty hot pretty quick, I ran mine for a few weeks with no gauges and I didnt realize until the gauges hot fast I can get it over 1400 degress. Good luck keeping the pedal off of the floor.....:ro)

Someone mentioned removing the CAT. Well, take the muffler off too. Its not that loud. My 84 Blazer with, headers, 2.5" pipe, flowmaster muffler,(NOT duals) would drown out every sound from my 04 D-MAX. Its a nice rummble under acceleration, and you get a little bit more turbo whistle.

For you fellas with the predator, how did you mileage go with that set-up? I currently have egde and attitude and am thinking about buying the predator and using that as the tuner and keeping the attitude on "0", unless I am in the mood for funk.

I have a spare (new) VDO egt probe from my Grand National. I will order another gauge for the truck.
OBTW . . . anyone know of a place to order A pillar cover to install the gauge?

I just dogged mine out when I put my 65hp tune on it. It makes the Allison learn faster that way. Or you could always go onto the freeway at 55mph and then drop it down into first and it will learn that way even faster.

hey guys any MPG calculations yet - without all the kitty's and EGR backwash?
