Hi there. I have a 1983 6.2L diesel GMC Day van and my torque converter is on its way out - basically the van cannot get itself up a kerb or over anything that requires a bit of torque. I have been told by the parts store that the 6.2 diesel can have a 3 pad or 6 pad torque converter design. Does anyone know what this refers to and how I can tell what mine is? They couldn't gather which I needed by my VIN number. Any information would be really useful....

Many Thanks

Chris

That means how many bolts hold the converter to the flex plate. The bolt boss's are basically pads welded to the converter with threads in them. Just take off the inspection cover on the bottom of the bell housing and take a look see.
