I'm toying with the idea of making a custom fuel tank that will fit under my Retax cover canister. Aprox. 8" x 14" x 56". I guesstamate 26 gallons. Does anyone know where I can get electric valve I can flip from inside the cab so the aux. tank will drain into the main tank when I want? Will having a vented fuel cap on the aux. tank throw any codes? Anything I over looked?

I've been throwing around the idea of doing the same thing. Here is a post on someone who has done it already with pictures. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7896&highlight=retrax+fuel
If I do it I want to make it removeable since I am starting with a short box. I'll have to find a way to do a quick release fuel line.

Hi,
Yes, I am the person who has done the same thing with a toolbox. It worked out very well.
For fuel, I bought a 75 gallon Supertank to replace the OEM tank and it has worked out very well without taking a cubic inch of cargo capacity.
The only drawbank to a Supertank or Transferflow OEM replacement is ground clearance if you were really using your ride off-road.
Good luck.

Yes, that looks great. Maybe I should get a Super tank and go with a tool box?

I put a RDS auxillary tank in the bed of my truck. If you look at Idle_Chatter pictures you can see how it was done. His is a little overkill with the roll-over valves and such which I did not do but a good idea if you plan on getting upside down. I purchased an RDS tank and the six way switching valve. The valves can be purchased from RDS or through the Northern Tool catalog. RDS makes the tanks for Northern Tool. I would believe with the six way valve, when you are switched onto the factory tank, a couple of quick disconnects would unhook the auxillary tank on you would be on your way.

Supertank + toolbox = way to go ! It gives you more capacity (fuel+tools), keeps your bed free and will probably also cost less since custom fabrication is expensive.
The Supertank has been invaluable for towing our 5er. In 20,000 miles of towing, I have only had to go into a filling station with the 5er twice.

Max Power; May want to look into some hydraulic quick disconnects. You would have to check that the o-rings (if particular set uses them) are compatible with diesel fuel.

I had an L shaped tank fabricated to wrap under my Retrax canister. Been running it for two years now. Holds 50 gallons; 55if I take the time to stuff it.
Front of the bed was already cut off from use by the Retrax, so I figured I lost nothing by filling up the space under the Retrax. One of the best non-performance mods I have done!

I understand the making of the tank. What I don't get is how to hook it up to flow to the main tank? Also can you - do you use a vented fuel cap on the aux. tank so it can flow to the main? Is the main tank vented?
Thanks

Aux. tank cap is vented, and I have a rollover vent installed as well so that I can gravity feed faster without opening the cap.
I made no changes to the main tank whatsoever; must be vented to some degree, as I gravity feed without opening the main tank cap.
Gravity feed is via a manual ball valve. I plumbed into the filler neck, and feed through the vent portion on the fill neck (between the outer rubber hose and the inner plastic hose).
Hope this helps.

Max - Summit Racing has quick disconnects for fuel lines. A bit pricy, though.
I too have the RDS toolbax/tank with valve. It is a 90 gal, so I run it most of the time - only use the OEM for reserve.
Saguaro Kid- I did mine the same as HoustonDmax but have inline as well an electric valve that fits a 70's chevvy 1/2 ton. You can still buy them new at the autoparts stores, it is an electric valve that allows fuel to flow through one way when power is applied and another when the power is off. You cap the power is off side and just use the power is on side through a switch on your dash that has power only when the key is on. Works great and was cheap. If memory serves it was an Echlin #2051 or something close.
