: Keyless idle?
bkcalhoun 03-12-2005, 09:12 PM Does anyone know how to keep a Dmax running without a key in the ignition?
I have a 2 year old who is growing fast and would hate to see him take off without me in the truck as two of my friends have had happen. (no injuries fortunately)

ssduramax 03-12-2005, 09:23 PM a buddy of mine just put something like that on his Furd, i will have to ask him what kind it is. It keeps the motor running for about 5 min. after he gets out to cool down the turbo. once you take the key out, if you put it in gear it will shut down. Does this sound like what you are looking for?
bkcalhoun 03-12-2005, 09:31 PM I have heard of those. I am looking for something to keep the truck (and heater) running indefinitely without the expense of a remote starter.
Max Power 03-12-2005, 09:37 PM You could easily do it with 3 relays and a momentary switch. Push the button and the truck will continue to run until someone hits the brake.
A remote starter will also do the same thing.
duramex 03-13-2005, 12:35 AM Set the E brake it shuld stay put
bkcalhoun 03-13-2005, 07:06 AM Set the E brake it shuld stay putBoth friends of mine that had this happen had the truck in park and the E-brake on. It's amazing how smart a 4 year old is! When they watch you get in the truck every time and: Turn the key, Pull the little lever next to steering wheel down, then reach down and pull the E-brake. All the while they are standing on the brake pedal so they can reach the steering wheel. Scary!!

could you help me with a simple wiing diagram? Or tell me what wires I am looking for in the truck. There are a lot of them to start probing with a meter! Thanks
homeskillet 03-13-2005, 09:42 AM i just installed a DIESEL TURBO LIFESAVER and man all i can say is awsome. it took me i would say a half and hour because i was a bit scared to make the roung conections but its great i can set the truck to run up to 250 min or a little at 1. i am able to set the timmer and take the key out. lock the truck so that it is safe and go in a store all while my truck stays worm. http://dieselsitetoo.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=29 it was 232 for the vertion i got. you can eather set it up so you dont have to cut a wire our you do. i went with the cut a wire method.
BLUEHERON 03-13-2005, 09:59 AM Why would anyone want to leave a 2 year old alone in a running vehicle "indefinitely'?
bkcalhoun 03-13-2005, 10:12 AM I'm sorry, I guess I phrased that wrong! I have an inverter that I plug in to the truck and sometimes may have to leave the truck run for a few hours on the jobsite (thanks to the high idle mod). At those times my child in not in the truck. Then when my boy is in the truck and I get out to get the mail, or whatever I want to get in the habit of taking the keys with me.

Max Power 03-13-2005, 12:43 PM Sorry I am not a very good drawer.
Anyways, this circuit will leave the truck run if you turn on the on/off switch while the truck is running on the key. It will not turn the igntion wires on if you turn the on/off switch on while the truck is off to prevent killing the battery if it is bumped accidently. It will also kill the truck if the the brake is pushed while running on this circuit and the key is not on.
There are a number of different ways to hook this up and tons of different options you could add into it. I kept it as simple as possible with a few fail safes that I thought were important.
Let me know if you have any ideas you would like to incorporate into this.
Good luck.
bkcalhoun 03-13-2005, 01:04 PM Thanks Maxpower. I think this does everything I want it to. I should be able to do this for less than 20$. better than 200$ for cool down timer or remote start (although that would be nice to have too). But I guess I could add a timer circuit to this and it would become a cool down timer. I assume that these wires are found in the dash below the steering column?. Iwill pick up relays and solder today and have it installed this week sometime. thanks again.
Max Power 03-13-2005, 01:06 PM Yes they are located under the steering column. Give me your email address and I will send you some pictures of the wires etc.
You could add a timer of some kind if you can find something. Just put the timer in series with the switch or replace the switch.
Rattlewagon 03-13-2005, 07:23 PM Max that is impressive!! :ro) That's exactly what I've been looking for as well!!!
that is soooo :cool2:
Would it be possible to get a copy of those pics too?
Max Power 03-13-2005, 07:26 PM I just need your email address. I have't sent his out yet so I can do them both at the same time.
freddyo 03-13-2005, 10:39 PM I just finished installing a Clifford Avanguard V alarm which includes that functionality (they call it "Short Stop"). With the engine running, you depress the "Remote Start" button on the key fob, remove the key (the engine stays running), exit the vehicle, and arm it. The run time is adjustable. In addition to the Remote Start and Short Stop functionality, it also has a feature called AutoStart. The alarm monitors the temperature and/or battery voltage and when one or the other hits a threshold (which is programable) the engine will start and run for a programable length of time. A little pricey and, for me at least, a hair-puller to get installed correctly. I counted sixty + wires when it came out of the box. But now it works flawlessly. Slick.
bkcalhoun 03-14-2005, 03:04 PM Maxpower, do you think I could use diodes and only 2 relays? I know you drew 30amp relays, but I am not sure of the current carried in the ignition wires. If it is like alot of other things on the truck it may only be switching voltage to the computer or a relay.
btw thanks for the pics.
Max Power 03-14-2005, 03:08 PM You'd have to check the draw of the wires. I recommend relays. You would probably need 10amp diodes or better and then you are pushing the relays to the limits. Relays are cheap, that is the way I would go.
Rattlewagon 03-14-2005, 05:21 PM Max or I should say Tony ):h how did you make your connections under the dash? Scotchlock's? Or soldering?
Thanks again!
dan
Max Power 03-14-2005, 05:25 PM I didn't actually do this mod I just put it together when it was requested. I highly recommend soldering to avoid problems down the road.
Rattlewagon 03-14-2005, 05:28 PM I agree! Thanks again
dan
Rattlewagon 03-15-2005, 02:38 AM this may be a stupid question but because the ignition switch is being bypassed will the keyless entry function normally? Like the key wasn't in the ignition?
Max Power 03-15-2005, 10:25 AM Yes.
Denny4kids 03-15-2005, 09:21 PM Good effort Max...Thanks!
I will add this to mine. We have hot summers here and now I can leave her running when we run into the store and the steering will be locked!! Cool. Den.
Kappa9012 03-16-2005, 01:48 PM I have a remote starter on my lly and after I have been driving in I can activate the turbo cool down mode. the truck stays running for a predetermined amount of time, and I can remove the key. BTW the remote starter is made by DEI it's a Valet system.
Rattlewagon 04-17-2005, 09:16 AM Has anyone else installed Max Powers keyless Idle mod? love mine, I also incorporated a relay for the high idle and tied the ground's for both into the parking brake circuit, so if you release the parking brake it stalls.
