I have an 82 6.2 diesel. i was wondering if the heads off an early manual pump 6.5 would fit? I'm looking at trying to turbo my 6.2 without paying out gobs of cash for a banks kit or what not. i have a 6.5 out of a 93 chevy pickup that i could get. turbo, manifolds, heads and injectors and pump. would everything be ok to swap out the turbo and fueling system off an early 6.5 to an 82 6.2 ?

Yes they will bolt up, but there are a few mods needed. First, use all of the 6.5 injection stuff, injectors, lines and pump. If you have A/c the stock 6.5 turbo manifold won't work because of the A/C evaporator, but a little fab work could probably come up with something. PM me if you have any other questions.:cool2:

My question is, do the heads need to be changed to use a turbo from a 6.5? Or can a 6.5 turbo setup just be put on the 6.2?

6.2 heads might arguably be 'better' Bigger exhaust valves, the rest is the same. I would go with whichever set is not cracked.

It just depends what you want to do. Yes the turbo will bolt up with the 82 heads. But there are other factors. 82 heads are prone to external coolant leaks and they are also the only year to use coarse thread injectors. All heads after 92 had the injector location changed, which helped reduce smoking, but also requires the use of propper injector lines. Give me a more specific question and I will try to answer it for you.;)

Sorry D. I have been thinking about finding a 6.5 turbo to put on the 6.2 in my 86. I just wanted to make sure it is possible. It will be some time before I come up with the spare $ to do the project. Who knows, by then I might find a nice sidewinder for it. I do need something that whistles in it though... the clatter can get boring sometimes... LOL

so if i was to just use the 6.2 heads, what all would i need off the 6.5 to complete the turbo setup? i assume i would have to keep the 6.2 fueling system? Or would i be able to use the 6.5 injector pump? What would you suggest? i know the injectors from the 6.5 wolnt thread into my 6.2 heads... but should i use the injector pump off the 6.5... as long as its manual? Any sugestions would be welcome! I'm open for ANY ideas... trying to save a buck to pack the cylinders!

I have run the 6.5 turbo manifold on an 83 pickup that I built. The catch is it works fine as long as you don't have A/C, if you do there is an interference problem. So when I took my 83 truck apart and built my 85 suburban(with air), I bought a banks exhaust manifold and crossover pipe and fabbed the rest. I ran a rajay turbo with a 4911 injection pump. You stock 6.2 pump will work with the turbo but you will be fuel limited. First off the 1/2 ton injector pumps need the fuel deliverly valve changed so they will flow more fuel. The J motors had more fuel capability but still no where near the 6.5 pump. I ran my 6.2's with the fuel screw wide open and it ran strong. When I built a 6.5 with a 6.2 pump it was a little weak in the fuel department. After adding a 6.5 pump and opening it up, it had plenty of fuel.:cool2:
