Are the 2005 lly's overheating like the 2004.5's? Thinking about trading in the 04 for an 05 if the overheating problem is fixed.

Well I have an 8 ft plow on the front and ballast in the back. The whole rig wieghs 8600 lbs, and with the blade covering the whole rad going down the road at 65-70 it almost hits 195*. I've never seen it warmer than that towing, razzing it, plowing or other.

I have a 2004.5 and it runs at about the 3/4 mark when towing. I have had it into the dealer numerous times and they say none of them run hot. I have been unable to get it fixed. What temp does yours run at ?

my 05 runs at 210 most of the time, at idle it goes down to 200

5900 miles on my 2005 LLY temp avg 195-200, towing about the same.

My 05 is the same as reported 200-210

That seems really high to me. My lb7 has never been over 200°. Even with some heavy mountain towing. With everyday driving it usually sits on 180-185° and maybe 190° with heavy use.

maybe the ca trucks run hotter

my 04.5 runs around 190-210 most of the time. even towing 12000lbs never higher than that. Even in FL during the summers it doesn't overheat. I have never gone above 210 with my truck.

Maybe you have a bubble under one fo the thermostats causing you to overheat. Do you have anything blocking the grill area? If your dealer is not following up with it, I would find another dealer in the area to take a look at it. Even if it is a GMC dealer. Let them know about the complaints you ahve ahd og overheating and ask them to check if there is an air pocket under one of the thermostats causing the thermostat not to operate properly.

sounds exactly like the "over heating" thread

You might want to do a search on overheating in the LLY forum to gather intel. IIRC the guys that were overheating were towing heavy, say 15k plus at higher elevations. We kind of narrowed it down to excessive boost and the inability of the stack to shed the heat. 205-210 is normal operating range for the LLy's, the LB7's run a tad cooler. :o:

There really hasn't been any significant changes to the LLY absent the reflashes they have put out there. My LLY seems to run/pull better post reflash. Now that I have added the E/J and MBRP exhaust I'm hopeful that overheating has been minimized. It doesn't need to be hot weather to overheat if your truck is going to do it, just high elevation and high boost with heavy weight.

Not everyone was having the overheating issue though which made it kind of hard to pin down. TxChristopher and Masterp2 were principal investigators on this. You might look for post by them. JJ :)

Remove the kitty, plug the egr, presto.... lower water temps.
Mine dropped to 180-190 most of the time, only when working it hard does it get to 200. Also egt's dropped at least 200 degrees when pulling.:grd:

Since when is 200-210 overheating and 190 not? IF the temp rises to 210 and holds there then it is not overheating. Just where it runs. All depends what the thermostat is. I guess my '95 burban has been overheating for 10 years.

A steady 210 is not overheating. Even 220 for that matter. Uncontrolled temps that climb through 230 are. JMO

my dad's truck runs there around 190 - 200 regularly .... if it is not in the red it is not overheating. i think they run that temperature to get fewer emmisions. i don't even think of 220 as hot although it rarely gets there. i think some people worry too much or have way too much time on their hands. i mean it would be like worrying about your oil pressure maxing out after starting it up when cold.

sheeeeeeesh some people. grrrrrrrrrrrr

yes there is a problem unless you consider 250 plus burbing your fluid ok. I hope that the 2005's are ok but when GM has done little to recognize the ploblem let alone fix it I wouldn't get my hopes up.And no I am not overloaded in any way shape or form. But other than it not being able to perform what it was bought for it's a great truck

i would look for an air pocket under one of the thermostats preventing them from opening as they don't sense the heat the same as one that is completely full. try another dealer or get it flushed and filled.

been there done that as far as thermostats are concerned

the problem i have with my 2005 dually is that when pulling a heavy load, grossing around 32000 lbs.going up a hill it will get up to 235 before the fan comes on.onnce the fan comes on it will cool right back down even though still pulling a grade at wot.

The reflash will address that.

the reflash fixes the overheating/hot running problems?
