I need to do the top mount passenger side battery mod on my truck. Any 6.5 guys feel like posting a large pic. of what they did? Thanks. :)

why do you need to change it?

I have not done it, but have thought about it next time I get new batteries.

I suppose, you just changed the end of the cables with the regular battery connector instead of lug connector. You probably can go to a part store and get it. Try to find a regular battery connector (marine ones) with a stud and nuts that can accept the lug connector or you have to cut and crimp the new connector in place of the lug.

My cables that join together keep giving me headaches. I have good charge one day and little the next. I need a better solution.

Gerald, my brother has my truck right now, but I got the Canadian Tire Eliminators with the side-and-top-post connectors. On the Passenger battery (the one with the dual connector) I cut that damn thing off and put a top-post connector on it (for the battery-to-battery cable) and then only had the single side-post connector (to the starter) on the side positive.

Driver's side battery looks normal.

Passenger-side: One cable on each positive post, negative cable on the negative side-post.

Some of the other guys have gone to studs and nuts on the side posts; that looks good, too.

Anything that doesn't involve that stoopid 2-cables-with-a-donut-between-them CF thing.

This sounds like a good idea Jim. I'm doing it tomorrow. I know I'll have enough cable for going to the top post from the drivers side battery, it should work. I'll post back on how it goes.

Thanks guys.

There's also some pics of the side-post mods in the alphabetical section of the FAQ, Gerald. That seems to work pretty good, too.

I did mine before anybody thought of that mod, or I might have tried that one, first. It looks like it would be easier than what I did.

I hear ya LOL nothing beats cleaning connections when it's -40

speaking of -40, know where to find any early 70's Polaris racing sleds? (starfire)

A starfire? I haven't seen one of those since... the early 70s. Neighbor had one. We hated him :)

The one that killed my ol' JD Liquifier looked just like this (http://www.gooselakeauto.com/1973_polaris_starfire.htm)...

The guy had a TX 440Free, too. Ever been on a sled going 80mph? Brrr..

IMHO,

If you take everything apart and clean it, the stock setup works fine.

Side post cables get corrosion under the bolts. (and the puck on the dual cable) Most of the current flows from the terminal to the bolt to the battery, the grips in the terminal can hold parts of the terminal away from the battery terminal unless you bear grip the bolts (risk breaking the battery termial)

Remove the bolts and puck, wire brush everything, apply anti corrosion grease and assemble.

Did mine last year, engine started great all winter. I'll be inspecting everything before winter. Especially the plow connections.

It can be amazing, fully charged battery and have a no start / no lights condition. Clean the corrosion from the cables & bolts, truck starts right up. ( no chanrger, no jumper cables)

I had the same problems with my old 6.5. It would get corrosion between the lugs, and the lead spacer. I found a company that would make custom cables for the side posts, and connect both cables to one lug, so there was no stacking the lugs, and no lead spacer in between.

http://www.custombatterycables.com/index.htm

Disassembling them, cleaning, and coating with a generous coat of electric grease will also extend the intervals between cleaning.

Hey, I think my uncle has one of them around somewhere...or at least pieces of one. There probably in the same barn as his 68 GTX. Was this the 3 cyl. sled?

Update: The mod has been done. I cut the end off the cable that runs from the driver side pos. and fastened a terminal clamp to the top of the pass. battery. I then cut off most of the rubber on the other cable that runs to the starter and bolted it up in the side terminal. This making any sense?

Thanks for the help guys. I really appreciate it.:)

Yep. Stupid looking things from the front. 'Course, you usually only saw the back of them... going away from you...

I feel real stupid right bout now Jim. I should know better. Stupid thing was...I DID look at the FAQ and I must have overlooked it. What was I thinking huh? Oh well, thanks a bunch for the help all of you. I promise to spend more time looking before asking next time .

Es nada, my friend. I wouldn't have mentioned it, except I don't know the answers very often, so when I do know the answer to something, I like to make it obvious. :)

did that mod several years ago using stainless and brass washers and a lot of dielectric grease. have to clean the contacts every couple of years because the corrosion still creeps up me. great set-up for giving people a boost w/ the larger bolt/lugs. never had a problem w/ voltage drops since.

Could be don't know too much about those sleds. If they are for sale let me know cause if they're complete they are worth a few bucks to me. runiing or not.
