I intend installing a Cat 1R-0749 filter, have got a head to suit - both available locally. I don't want to mount it in the wheel well like the Nicktane kit as I intend fitting a flat deck and it would be highly visible. So tossing up whether to mount it inside the chassis rail with a small skid plate (of course), or in the engine compartment there is room high up on the firewall on the left hand side (Truck is now right hand drive). What are the pros and cons?

Off hand I don't know how long the filter element is that you have but you could mount it inside the frame rail before the fuel cooler. For that matter I'm not sure it has to be mounted vertically. Some folks have mounted fuel filters in the engine compartment in the second alternator position.
Do a search and look for the Racor filter installs...lots of pictures. If you need a hand I might be able to help you search. I've got a Racor mounted in front of the fuel cooler with a bracket to protect it from debris...so far no complaints. I would guess that mounting one in the engine compartment would be great. The thing for me is ease of installation and maintenance. The Racor kit from lubespecialist.com and the Nicktane are easy installs. kennedydiesel.com has the megafilter that fits under the air filter box to give you some ideas---it's post OEM. Lots of info here from a lot of smart and experienced people if you do some diggin....

Hi Aussie DMAX
Conversion was done here in NZ by a company in Auckland.
Which style Eagle Alloys do you have? What do you think of your Cooper ST tyres? Seen the dead pedal on the other thread - I'd like one of those. What's it fabricated out of? What are your thoughts on the Bilestein shocks?
Have been to Corvette Queensland in Gympie a couple of times while on holiday at the Sunshine Coast.

Hi Kiwi Ed
I have the 058 style wheels ; partnumber 0589-7888 www.aewheel.com/wheels_detail.cfm?id=23
They are a great fit on the rear; at the front they stick out a bit and if you have standard height up front you have to cut back the air dam a little. I have only done 11k with the Coopers. So far so good although because of the aggressive thread they "zing" a bit on the black top. The dead pedal is made of some kind of hard plastic. I'm sure Corvette Queensland could ship one to you if you want one.
I have ordered Bilsteins. I had Bilsteins on my 98 Suburban and loved them. One thing I know for sure: the original shocks are going!!
Enjoy your truck :driver:
