I Don't know about anyone else, but the headlight switch on my instrument cluster, the one that turns the parking lamps, head lamps on and also has the dimmer switch keeps going bad. I always notice this oily goo that melts out of it. Has anyone done an upgrade to totally get rid of these worthless switches? Thanks in advance!!!

Installing relays, there are some kits out there from vendors, will remove the load from the switch, which should enable them to last longer

All of the vendor ones that I know of only get the head lights off the switch. They don't do anything about the park light circuit and that is the one that burns out (wait till you have to replace that connector on the head light switch wiring harness it's about $70.00 IIRC.

I put a relay in the park light circuit and that fixes that problem. ;) Try counting all the park lights on your truck sometime (don't forget the license plate lights) I have seventeen IIRC. If a load the camper on it I end up with twenty more and if I pull a trailer with the camper add another eleven park lights for a total of forty eight. I will say this none are extras just what was installed on my rig, camper, trailer when I bought them.

well its not like the factory does not use a relay (or a few) for the parking-running lights. not all the power that is being used goes through the 14-16 gauge wire in the back of the head light switch. the actual switch does not carry that much of a load. i think it is just poor design then if they keep going out.

i know on my 94 this last week i noticed that i would turn on the switch, and it would take upto 4-5 seconds before the lights would turn on......sounds like i may have a switch going out??? i hope not!

I burned up 2 headlight switches before I finally put a relay on the parking light side. I tow a wells trailer that has a bunch of extra markers and such and it kept on getting slow to activate, dripping the dielectric grease, and eventually failing completely. I put another switch in about 2 years ago and did a relay at the same time and haven't had any issues to date.

My 97 didn't have a relay for any of the park lights till I added my relay.

I don't believe GM used a relay in the light systems, but maybe they.
