it seems I'm going to need a ball mount that has more drop than the one I have. I measured the middle of the ball (Is that the right place to measure?), and it's about 21" above the ground though the mount already has a 5-3/4" drop. We are planning to rent a pop-up camper which I was told is about 12--15" above the ground.

So am I going to need like 9--11" drop? I've been thinking about an adjustable mount, but they are more expensive and might introduce more slack. What should I consider when buying another mount? Are there any brands that can be recommended over others?

for a popup, you are likely to be 2-3k trailer weight. Just about anything will hold that. Under 5-6k anything the auto parts store carries should be ok.

Thanks! They are saying they weigh about 3500. The hitch seems to be a 5k one, but I'm not sure. I'd rather get a mount that holds up to more --- it won't hurt but insure that it's not going to cause trouble. A long drop probably causes some strain ...

If it's just for the pop up rental, buy one w/ the 9-11" or so of drop that is cheap and a 5000# rating. If you plan on using that much drop to tow heavier in the future, get a beefier one. However they start getting expensive pretty quick with that much drop and say a 10000# rating. Have fun on the trip.

It turned out that adjustable ones are hard to find. But I got one with an 11" drop, that should do fine.
