Talked to a guy today that just bought a new 3500HD Dually CC. He said he told the dealer he did not want the Allison 1000 transmission he wanted the new 5000 transmission. What is he talking about?

The only transmissions allison lists on their website that are in the 5000 number range are for those big coal mining dump trucks and off highway oilfield work. The lightest allison 5610 weighs in at 2200#. That'd be one big doolie.

How many gears does that thing have, 10? I could not imagine how low first gear is, but the driveshaft and rearend would have their objections.

He said today his transmission was "not" a allison. What other transmission does Chevrolet offer?

A ZF is a manual six speed.

The guy has no idea what he's talking about. If he has the Vortec 8100 or the Duramax diesel in a GM pickup, then he has only two transmission options...the Allison 1000 auto, or the ZF-6 manual..period, no discussion.

Or the 8.1L with a 4l85e in a suburban or avalanche.:rolleyes:Yup, exactly right...that's why I prefaced my comment with "in a GM pickup."
