I've been looking into buying a duramax but with all this talk about cracked pistons and bent rods with just tuners(400-500hp) i'm alittle worried. It seems like trucks with 60k miles and under are going for 20k+ but trucks with 100K+ miles are going for as low as 14k. So was thinking about getting one with higher mileage and putting that extra savings into building the engine. So just wondering how these trucks are holding up with 100-150K+ miles on them.

Normal stuff, but if you build the engine and tranny you wont have to worry about much...
I hold that statement loosely

I have 151,000 miles and mine aint broke yet:p:
I added water injection to keep the EGT's down I think that will help in longevity but who knows

My service truck (03) just turned 250k today. Just added an Edge, but we don't beat it up, and time will tell I guess. The truck runs like new though if that helps.

i bent the rods in my truck with 23k miles. i have a buddy who has cracked pistons in two duramaxes. one with 40k miles and the other close to 100k miles. it doesn't really seem that milage is a big factor IMO

if you are planning to modify it, then finding high mileage engine that checks out to be sound as the amout of prior testing you want to do, Tech-II(balance, rail pressure and DTC's) compression test. still no guarantee that these will prevent failures. savings could be used to offset mods.

my buddy has around 130,000 on his motor and at the end of this past winter he did head work and installed and Aurora 5000 on his truck. still runs strong with no problems so far. and that motor is pushes to the edge with the tune

i dont have any experience with buying high mileage duramax's but i have experience with a high mileage ford expedition. Now i know the whole ford thing may bring up controversy but my buddy bought a 2000 expedition with 190,000 miles and the motor and tranny had been replaced at 150,000 but everything else on the truck was still 190,000 miles old. So if you bought a higher mileage truck and build the motor sure it will be nice and durable, but everything else on the truck will still be old and worn out. Maybe that doesnt matter in this situation but if it were me i would rather save the money i would spend building the motor and use it towards a newer truck with nicer interior and new parts all around i.e brakes, drive shaft, axles...etc.

Don't worry about it, 100K miles isn't much for one of these trucks. And if you're gonna build the engine you might as well save some money up front.
