I wanted to know just how the EGR valve works and what problems can or could be associated with it. If some of the vacuum lines were disconnected, what would that do to the engine? My 6.5 TD is throwing up codes 32 & 33 consistantly. Both are associated with the EGR.

Thanks for the info

EGR valve is a antipollution device intended to reduce NOx emissions, pollutants which cause smog.

The EGR valve open on command from the PCM under no throttle situations to allow a small amount of exhaust gas to enter the intake air stream, resulting in less oxygen for combustion, which results in a cooler flame front and less NOx.

NOx is generated in greater quantities when oxygen and nitrogen are combined in higher temperatures.

The valve is pretty simple, take out the two bolts holding it on the intake and you'll see, it is a spring held plug, which opens when the PCM commands, and the EGR solenoid opens (or closes) to allow vacuum to the valve, opening in varying amounts depending on the duty cycle demanded, to allow small amounts of exhaust gas from the cylinder head to drift into the air intake.

Codes 33 and 32 probably mean that your vac hose is disconnected on either side of the EGR solenoid, or your vacuum pump is dead.

yup, then once this planet's gone, we'll move to Mars or Jupiter or somewhere and start all over again

SpaceAce may be working on a rocket to get us there right now...
