: Convert dual to single?

Anyone ever do this?

I know the benefits of duals but I also would like to be able to more easily drive off road.

What is involved in converting to SRW?

Swap the bed is a given, but can I still use the same axle, is it the same width as a SRW?

I am not for sure thinking I will do it, I was just wondering.

Thanks

I've considered the same thing. As far as I can tell, remove the adaptor/spacer from the front, change the bed or buy the replacement panel, then put the other wheels on and go. But this is only what I have come up with. The rear axle is supposed to be wider than the standard single wheel truck but I don't think it would hurt anything to use the stock one.

Unfortunately not. The DWR rearends are wider a good bit wider than the SRW rearend, so if you just change beds and mount regular rims, they will stick out too far. I found this out when I was looking for reands for my dually.

For an example here is my '67 with the '97 C3500 DRW rearend before I put the flares and outer wheels on it. Notice the mounting surface of the drum is nearly flush with the wheelwell. Of course you could run it like this have the "Railroad Truck" look. That's what everybody that saw mine like this thought it was!;)

What kind of off road are you doing? These trucks are not very good off road because of size and lack of suspension flex.

If you only want a single wheel dually check out this garage for the Neens. I know its slicks but I'm sure you could add some off road tire.

Also on the dually the rear of the frame is slightly wider then the srw. The spring perch's don't line up on the srw axles.

Not really off roading per say... but more like going camping on less traveled and often dirt roads. For instance the other day I was out with the wife and kids and I was having to pay real attention on some trails that I have been down many times with other trucks and had no worries, but with the big hipppy Beeaach I felt like I was going to hit ever tree there was... :(

And the road I am talking about is just a 2-3 mile dirt road to a local swimming hole but it is out a dirt road... anyways, no biggy... I will just keep the duals and be cautious like I was when trailing around. :)

So correct me if im wrong but couldnt the width diffrence be taken car of with hub/axle swaps? Our is the overall leangth of the rearend houseing wider than a srw with out the hubs?

My vote is going with a Super Single rear tire. I saw a Kodiak last week that has aftermarket (alco 22.5") and had a HUGE, probally atleast 20" wide rear tire. It was pretty bad @SS.

I love the idea of it, but being double SOL with a flat tire sounds like a crappy situation

i bolted on a fleetside bed and popped off my two rear tires this week and.... I hate it! Buying either gmt700 dually flairs or possibly using one of the other big three's dually fenders. One things a fact im not staying srw and im not bolting on another glass bed.

04 rams have nice fenders thinking of swapping on some of those, I think their teardrop shape would really set off the denali grill...IMO
