Found a early 6.2L (painted red) with approximatly 20K miles. I haven't seen it yet, but the guy says it runs good. No leaks. Uses no oil. Came out of a wreck and was put a motorhome. Now he's parting out the motorhome. Glow plugs are bad. He wants $600 for it. What do you guys think?

I might go look at it Friday. It's about 50 miles away. I was thinking about 500 too.

I would ask to pull the pan to check the bottom end for cracks. What all are you getting?

How can it only have 20K miles? Maybe 220K, but 20K??? Painted red probably means work has been done on it at sometime in the last 20 years. And glow plugs should not have gone bad within 20K miles. The engine may have some mushroomed glow plugs in the heads. The first glow plugs were Delco 9G's and then GM started using 11G's, but all of those can be bad news for mushroomed heads.

Other thing I would avoid with it, painted red to me means early early 6.2.... make sure that its not the 'older' heads.... the ones that were really known for cracking....

Looked at engine. Didn't see any major leaks. Intake manifold was a little dirty inside. Guy's an old rancher and he said it was running about a month ago before he pulled the 700r4 tranny. Looks like I need the two starter bolts to try and fire it up. Motor looks good though. Should I hear it run before buying? Anything else to look for?

Hearing it run would be a good thing. Kind of a lot of trouble though when the engine is out of a vehicle.

That red '82 block and some late 6.5 heads, injectors and -4911 inj pump will make an excellent 165hp n\a engine.

With the really late '97-up heads, you may even be able to install the larger exhaust valves from those '82 heads, adding exhaust flow without the cracking problem in the early heads.

Is there any way to tell if you have the late 97 heads by casting numbers? I have parts of several pin spray engines and would like to know about the heads because I was thinking of doing the big valve swap but would hate to mess up a set of good heads for it.
