: DPF regen??
brandonc707 09-14-2008, 02:02 PM How do I know when my truck goes into regen??
I have about 600 miles on it and haven't noticed it go into regen yet?
Will I know?
Is there a readout thet can show the amount the DPF is plugged?
Just curious, Thanks:)
The only way I knew mine went into regen was watching the average fuel MPG like a hawk. I did also come to a stop at a light signal shortly after mine started and smelled the hot pipe in the first regen. Otherwise, I never would've known. Fortunately mine didn't have any of the strong exhaust odor some complain about. If you're at 600 miles, I guarantee you've had at least one and probably two regens. You just never noticed.

Pretty much what DanW said and the engine idle will be about 850 rpm.
Mine regins after every fill-up or about 320-370 miles depending on if it is city or hiway miles. More regin with city driving.

Tanc Crusher 09-14-2008, 04:42 PM only way is with a monitor than tell you. Either look into an Edge Insight or MSD DashHawk II. Both look the same. I have the DashHawk but with the way they drop one hell of great support team for the product I would favor the Insight at this time.

Wes R. 09-14-2008, 10:55 PM I notice it because my truck idles a little higher and I can smell exhaust in the cab.
Rob Williams 09-15-2008, 05:44 AM Hey Guys, I am new here so please forgive me for asking something that may sound stupid to you all but, What is regen? I just recently, (2 weeks ago) bought my second truck with a Duramax Diesel in it and I am just learning as much as I can about these things.

BlackSSmoke 09-15-2008, 12:07 PM GREAT! I am concerned that I dont enought time to drive my truck to work everyday, about 10-15 minutes, 8-10 miles away. Now, things would be different if these trucks had a manual switch for regens like the 4500 do...! WTF?
Dmaxpower2 09-15-2008, 12:28 PM BlackSSomke,
Once the coolant temp reaches 50C and your vehicle speed is over 25MPH regen will start. If the regen event doesn't have time to complete, regen will continue where it left off the next time the above conditions are met.
A regen takes about 20 minutes, you're almost there with a 15 minute drive to work, when you head home it should finish. If you are driving at slow speeds, hit the tow/haul button, this will put you into regen at slower speeds.

I'm not sure why these truck didn't get a manual regen switch. One reason I can think of is the extreem caution that need to take place when performing the manual or service regen. The engine speed ramps up to 2,500, the engine and exhaust components become very hot and It's not to performed inside a garage or pole barn.

thanks for the info.
So, yesterday I had to do some errands before I went home from work. I noticed that the truck was "making" more noise that usual (like when the fan is ON) and I figure that its on regen mode. I continued driving home and the moment I exit the truck I could smell something like burnt ashes. I did not shut her off and I let her idle for 10 minutes, crab my mail, went inside my house, change and I went back outside the truck sound normal at idle again. Maybe the total time was 15-20 minutes. The truck smelled like something was burning. Now, that's why I seen some white pufs on my rear bumper. I thought it was left over wax when I drove my truck that day from the dealer. I bet my $$ that was residue from the DPF on my rear bumper
