Get the VIN and someone on the Forum will get the GM maintenace records for you. That will be a start to finding out what kind of dealer work has been d=ne. Can't help you on the price.

I had an 01 3500 8.1/alli. I loved that truck. Awesome power "out of the box", Allison was awesome. Two things I didn't like: the leather seats and the fuel economy...... or lack thereof. I traded it for a DMAX. But you won't hear me say anything bad about the 8.1 at all.

ive seen a few dually 8.1's absolutely obliviate the tires stock, til he ran out of gas :D

Traded my '01 8.1 in on a DMAX last July. Had around 35,000 miles. Great vehicle overall. Fuel door was wearing out however. The 8.1 loves to run but it has a big appetite for fuel. Torque converter was replaced at about 20,000 miles. Dealer tech heard something he did not like so unit was R&R'ed. I wasn't aware of any problem but I'm a bit mechanically challenged, like a lot.

I just traded my 02' as well. Killer truck (power, ride, towing) but as others are telling you gas mileage is horriable!!!!!!
