: Fuel gauge / Tach issue....anyone else?

I have noticed a recent problem with my 04 Duramax. On occasion, but becoming more frequent, my Fuel gauge will stop working. Just shows EMPTY, but the light does not come on. Usually when the outside temp is HOT, 90's or above, this occurs if the truck has been sitting. I go to start her up, she runs find, but the fuel gauge is on 'E'. Now if it is cool outside, this rarely happens. Also, on occasion, and does not seem to be timed with the Fuel gauge issue, but the tach will read low, or nothing at all. This is rare, but it does occur about 1X a month. The Fuel gauge is occuring about 1X a day now and it really bugs me.

Anyone else have a similar problem or know where to start looking for the issue? I dont believe its the sending unit from the fuel tank, because I believe the low fuel light would also come on if that was the signal it was getting from the tank. I believe it must just be in the gauge itself, but not for sure.

Any input is appreciated.

search stepper motors. those have a tendancy to go out on these guage clusters. i think my oil press. is on the shits. choppy movement, and i dont think it is accurate anymore. My dad had his guages replaced on his 04 1/2ton, when he was going 37MPH when he was out of his truck!! and going "nowhere" going down the highway!!

There are issues with the instrument cluster. My 03' had a oil pressure gauge go haywire (read pegged constantly) and the entire cluster was replaced free of charge by the dealer. I had even bought the truck used, the problem is recognized by GM....
