Hi all, I am new to this forum but not at all new to Chev/GMC trucks (see sig).

A while ago my Dad was driving the 97 on the highway and an oil cooler line burst. He shut it off as soon as he was aware of the problem, but I think it was too late.

We pulled the truck to a local garage and put on a new line and then filled the truck up with oil. Everything was working fine, and then the engine started knocking really bad and it came to a stop on the highway. We pulled the truck home. It started back up, but it had a horrible knock, and there was black smoke coming out of the tailpipe. It is obvious that a rebuild is required, and as of right now the engine is just about ready to get pulled out.

My questions are as follows: What broke to make the knocking noise - did a wrist pin let go? Why would it immediatley start smoking (there was no problem with smoking before the oil cooler line went south)? When the rebuild goes back in the truck, do I need a scantool to set the timing or is it just set using the mark on the injection pump?

Thanks in advance for the help.

No oil equals BAD. Engine probably spun a rod bearing. If it was run very long at all it also probably destroyed the turbo. You can probably count on needing a crank and one or more rods and probably a turbo.:(

No, set the pump straight up and down dead center, shut off solenoid not leaning left or right. start the truck and check idle quality, take it to the drivers side as needed. 1mm= 2 degs timing. TDC offset will relearn if you do the K O app 1min KO 1min start.

Thanks a lot guys, I will probably be posting more questions as the process progresses.:)

what does K O app 1min KO 1min start.mean?quantum mechanic?

That's the sequence for TDC offset learn.Get the engine hot, Key on, APP pedal to the floor for 1 min. Key off 1 min. Restart.

So will that sequence work on a 94 also?My uncle has one that we put an injection pump on and it starts and idles good for 5 min or so till it starts to warm up and the idle slows down then it seems like its missing. He took it to the dealer for them to time it but they said they didnt know much about it and they couldnt get a reading. So can you just move the pump till it settles down or what.Any ideas are appreciated.

Works on all 6.5s. Have to have engine temp above 170F and no codes set. Need to have a scanner to verify that the TDC Offset value did relearn, and that its withing specs.

So what do you think about the miss?
