: Head gasket questions.....

I am experiencing pressure in radiator hose and in resovior after cooling all night. This is after the dealer installed injectors in my truck. Also loosing coolant and smelling it in exhaust.

The dealer is telling me 5800 to replace gaskets (along with heads assuming they are bad). This is way out of budget, especially after Ive spent 3000 with them. I never had a low coolant light before this last install of injectors.

Question........

1. What is the going rate for head gasket replacement ?
2. How can I determine which head has the problem?
3. Could it be water pump or injector cups, if so how can I tell?
4. Dealer says 35 hour job with head replacement, is it really?
5. Looks as though I may be doing this myself, any threads to the actual job description and/or parts list?

Ive spent too dam much money on this truck, this year alone almost 14k, what in the hell is going on......truck makes no more than 30psi boost, never been above 1450 egt's. Some body please help me in this matter, my truck has not been in my hands for 48 hrs after dealer installed 90hp sticks......

Thanks

Unlikely it's the gaskets....they probably F-ed up the injector cup install.

Where each injector goes in the head, there is a hole going all the way through. They put a cup in there that holds the injecor and seals off the water gallery in the head. The bottom of the injector cup requires a sealant. The top is sealed by 2 orange o-rings. A lot of people have screwed up the bottom by either not using the right sealent, not using enough, or not having all the parts extremely clean upon reassembly.

I'd bet a lot it is one or more of these, NOT your head gaskets.

The main issue is that when you remove the injectors, it often pulls up a cup stuck to them. I just did my injectors and all cups stayed in except for one.

Pull the glow plugs out and spin the motor over without starting it. See which ones are leaking and they'll have to go back in and replace them correctly.

Hell, they should probably do all 8.

I'd be pissed. This is not a hard job. Long job, but not hard. If you're doing it yourself and you are meticulous, this will take the better part of a whole weekend.

I am pissed. The dealer said "Well you know youve got all the power and with that power in there......". I stopped him there, and explained I was under factory limits for boost pressure, and that I also was sure it was something they did only due to the fact that these symptoms were not evident before they worked on it. Did no good.

Very good response, thank you. Is there any way I can determine this before taking it back?

They have already ripped me for 700 dollars on the replacement of fuel filter assy. They said this was the reason it wasnt starting....."hairline crack".

Unfortunately I think you're screwed. I don't think there's a way to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that it's the cups and not the gaskets, unless you tear into it. With what's been done, there's too much muddy water for them to hide in.

If you pull the cups, I'd look real close for evidence of the red sealant (resembles Loctite 272). The cups have to be new ones as well. I wonder if they tried just sticking the old ones back in.

The filter housing thing may not be a fluke. If it was continually losing prime then it would be a beeyotch to start.

First set of 50hp they replaced two sleeves. This set they didnt replace any. Apparently from what they have said, the sleeves or cups do not have to be changed during injector jobs. I suspect cups also and not head gasket for the simple reason it did not have coolant loss issues before.

Monday the are going to pressure test coolant system and compression test also to determine what may be the cause. I rode their ass this morning and they agreed that something is wrong......................teehee. Ive spent enough money with them this month, they owe me some shop time.

thanks nw......
