: Crap! Need a new transmission. Which way should I go....
70 gsconvt 09-11-2008, 10:28 AM Well, truck has only 74.5K miles and the transmission went out. Took it to the dealer and they pulled the pan. They have a handfull of bearing material and brass. They said it looks like one of the gear sets let go. There was material on both sides of the internal filter, so stuff got through it and went into the pump, through the valve body, the converter, etc.
They want $5K for a rebuilt trans with a 3 year, 50K warranty. Should I go that route or is there an alternative in the aftermarket that would be better and more cost effective?
I don't hotrod my truck. I do tow my camper and a car about 6 times a year. But the most I tow is about 10K lbs. The dealer has even said that this is the first truck like mine that they've seen with this damage.
Any input would be appreciated. I gotta do something by Monday. I'm druiving a Prius right now and I NEED my truck back. Thanks.

For 5K you could have a pretty sweet built trans.
stroke250 09-11-2008, 12:15 PM definitely go with a aftermarket build, not stock
70 gsconvt 09-11-2008, 12:23 PM OK, from who? Vince from Janis Transmissions, can get me a trans from Detroit with a 3 year/100K warranty for about $4,200 installed, plus my $200 to pay the dealer and get it towed over there. I'll give Suncoast a call.
Is there anybody in or near Ohio that re-builds these things well?
Talked with Suncoast. $5100 plus the cost at my tranny shop. Now at almost $5,600. Grrrrrrrr.
stroke250 09-11-2008, 01:29 PM contact eric@merchant automotive. he is a supporting vendor on here. he is located in holland, mi. many people have driven long distances to have him build their transmissions.

For a stage V?
70 gsconvt 09-11-2008, 03:27 PM GM rep called dealer and talked with them. They are replacing my trans. I just have to pay diagnostic fee and labor. Bill now under $1,500. I'll be going this route.

Good to hear. Cant beat a new Ally for that #.
radvans 09-11-2008, 03:51 PM I had a SCIV, 1058, TC brace, installed for $4000. By the best not just any plain jane shop.
If you don't plan on running anymore power then $1500 is good. If you plan on running big power get the built trans installed now. You could get a SCIII and converter for around $3500 installed.

Its great to hear some good news when something like this happens...
This sort of major failure is not typical for the Allison. Glad that GM stood up and will replace the trans!
toddol1971 09-12-2008, 07:38 AM That would never happen to me. You must be better with God than me.
70 gsconvt 09-12-2008, 07:49 AM Believe me when I say that this is a first for me in my 45+ years on this earth. Usually it's "Oh, so sorry to hear about your bad luck." I guess I should say an extra prayer today for this.
GetSome8.1HD 09-12-2008, 04:15 PM Was bout to say it "should" be covered under warranty. But we all know how that goes
rdeterman 09-12-2008, 05:49 PM Good to hear some positive feedback from GM on your tranny... must have been your lucky day!
70 gsconvt 09-28-2008, 06:22 AM Well, I got my truck back. It runs fine, but they "updated" my truck's computer and now my Hypertech Power Programmer is worthless. GGRRRRRRRR.
Called Hypertech and they said "That's too bad since you're not the original owner of the unit. That'll be $266 to fix it." I can get a new one for $299 at Summit.
