Taking care of a few minor leaks while I'm under the truck. Looks like I've got a small oil leak coming from the drain plug. I was about due for a change anyway so i pulled the plug. It has a rubber type gasket on it that looks pretty chewed up

and there was a crush washer over that.

The gasket looks bad enough that it could allow a leak.

The metal washers from my '93 don't fit but I've got some plastic washers that fit (also for the '93) and a metal crush washer from my AMC 360.

Anyone know about that chewed up gasket on the plug? Think it will be OK to pry it off and go with the plastic or metal washer?

It's pretty standard procedure. Plastic gaskets are pretty common, I'd go with that. Seals better than metal alone. Just don't overtorque it.

I would go with the appropriate sized copper washer if I used the stock drain plug...I went with a Fumoto valve, so I don't have to worry about that anymore.

Copper washers work fine.I agree with vin63 on that.Thats what I use on my oldsmobile engines.Never had a problem.

Gaskts do not last for ever. Any type will work but I like the fiber ones the best; they are harder to over torque because they have some "give" to them.
