I have a recently aquired engine that has one cross threaded glow plug port. When I put new plugs in, the plug seemed to go in and seat well. However, I'd like to fix the port so that I can do a compression test on the engine. If I tap out the port will there be enough thread left to bite well enough? How do people usually fix a buggered hole?

Thanks

No personal experience but the helicoil kit seems to do it for spark plug holes.

I would try carefully chasing the threads with a good sharp tap.

I have had success cleaning threads, that are not badly damaged, using a tool constructed from and old, burned out glo-plug. I took a Dremel tool and cut three sharp-edged notches in the threaded portion of the old plug (up and down, across the length of the threads). I keep it sharp with a diamond point file. I simply apply heavy chassis grease to the tool and gently thread it into the damaged glo-plug hole in the head. It acts as a thread "chaser", cleaning and straightening the existing threads, without actually cutting new threads or removing material from the head. It's worked on several jobs for me, try it.

Thanks for the help. I'll try the homemade thread chaser, as I really don't want to tap new threads and remove any more material.
